Shot my 500 S&W Handi today

Ordered a set of lee dies from Midway when I bought my 500 S&W Handi and using there data I loaded up 5 rds. using 44.5 grs of H-110 with a speer 325 gr. H.P. and 5 rds. with 42.5 grs. of Lil-Gun and the same Speer H.P. Let me tell you The recoil with these is brutal. I have a Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70 and using hot loads with RE-7 that is mild compaired to the 500. The recoil shooting from the bench tears the rifle from my hand. I have fired 416 Rem. Mag and it is not much worse. I can't imagin shooting this in a handgun. I think I will down load this a bit, but with these loads I would not be underguned for anything in North America. This rifle and load is Awesome.  :-D

About 3 lbs of lead in the stock will help you with this one..and your right..even my 2400fps 300 Nosler load isn't that bad..but I had 2-1/2lbs of lead in mine..My stainless 1895GS's kicked..but were managable..The small grind to fit Limbsaver would be high on my list for yours too..it really tames things down...along with a nice soft cheek piece...heck...you may like it so much..you'll want to really load it up :)  :)  :)  :wink:

I'm using 35 gr of H110 and a 400 gr. hardcast lead bullet.  It too is a shoulder pounder.  I still don't believe sane people shoot these in a handgun.  Sane people also most likely don't have 14 Handi's either!

I have shot this in a handgun and although it has noticeable recoil it really isn't all that bad.All posted reports I have seen on Handi's in this caliber have made notice of the extreme recoil.

Stan's comments reminded me of a Marlin 9mm Camp Carbine I once had. While the 9mm from a pistol is a real pussycat, when fired from that carbine it had some kick. That may well be the case with the .500 in a handy as well. I'd go the recoil pad route first, Limbsaver or better yet a X-coil pad from Hi-Viz. If that don't work cut yourself a 8" long piece of 3/4" copper pipe and fill it with lead. It fits into the stock like it was always meant to be there.

As best as I can tell it weighs about 1.5-2.0 lbs.
