I haven't really thought of it, but I do have a coin that is of value to me. It is a wheat penny with the date of 1917. I think I found it in a money counting machine. The grocery store we go to has one of those coin counters (those machines that count the value of the coins, in which it gives you a receipt which you then give to the clerk for the amount in paper money...whew!) Sometimes people forgot the odd change that was left. Every now and then, I would luck out and get a handful of change out of it. So that is likely where I picked this puppy up. Not to mention I now have several coins from foreign countries because of this.

I'm a little disheartened after reading about the proper treatment of coins, since I remember removing the tarnish from it. Is that possibly reason enough to be kicking myself? Any approximate value on it?

Hi Patriot!

Those are Coinstar machines. We have them here too. I use those to cash in all my Clad (current mintage /current face value coin) finds after i have ran them thru a rock tumbler to clean them up. I have found Wheat pennies there too that people have left behind.

What is the mint mark on the coin? Find out the mint where it was struck and i will do a search and see if i can get a current value for you

That's right, Coinstar. Thanks for revealing the mystical name I couldn't remember. :lol:

Well, here's what I found out, it has no mintmark. I read at the following site that would mean it is from Philadelphia. A "P" or no mintmark is a Philadelphia coin. Here is the site: http://www.sammler.com/coins/coininfo.htm#Conditions They also have coin values for particular mintmarks, dates, etc. Check them out.

The features of the coin are quite worn but no serious damage or scratches are apparent. An example would be that Lincoln's head and face are smooth, no detail, but the silhouette is still visible. The letters and numbers are still quite legible. What condition would that be? I'm still an amateur to this kind of research, so I guess in time I will be able to judge that too. :grin:

Howdy Patriot

The 1917 Wheat penny (we call em wheaties) were minted in Philly with 196 million struck. Denver with 55 million struck. And San Fran California with the lowest number at 33 million struck there.

A 1917 from Philly in the grade VF which = Very Fine, is worth one dollar current standards. An XF which = Extra Fine is currently at 4 dollars from my search resource.

Sounds like yours would proably considered fair to good condition and probably still worth face value.

It might not be worth a mint but it's a treasure to you and thats what matters the most!:D
