260 accuracy question
« on: April 26, 2006, 04:28:38 AM »
i've been shooting various loads thru my .260 using 120gr. speer hotcors and 120gr. nosler BTs. the gun shoots pretty well for the most part. i sometimes get a flyer which messes up a good group. i usually hit around 1"-1.5" groups with handloads. i replaced the trigger sear spring with a lighter one, but i'm trying to decide if i should try a larger hingepin. with the forearm off i can feel "wobble", but with the forearm on its harder to notice. the hinge pin is easily removed with a simply push with any small instrument. what do you think i should do?

A couple of points of reference. First I would consider the oversize hinge pin to be the absolute last resort to resolve any accuracy issues. Second if installing the foreend reduces the wobble (?) then it obviously is contacting the frame and the barrel at the same time....this is never good.  After you have determined that everything you do is consistent ; gunrest, trigger control, scope alignment etc. then determine that everything about the ammo is consistent........I may be tempted to try a hinge pin but only after all other considerations have been exhausted.
Might try floating the foreend away from the barrel first thing.

Is the flyer in the 1-1 1/2" group?  You say a rare flyer, sure it is not the shooter?  With a group like that I would make sure the forearm is not rubbing the sides of the frame and quit looking for a problem that does not exist.  My hinge pins all push out easy and I like it that way.  Last thing I need is a hammer and punch to change a barrel.  Besides the fact that most peoples testing show that an oversized hinge pin usually makes accuracy worse.

Have you tweaked the load yet.  If not that is what I would do and call it good.
