pete, start with 13 grains of unique and work up to 16.5=12/1600 fps
40-48 gr rl7 =1500 to 1800fps
41.5 to 49gr 3031=1400 to1700 fps these loads for the 400 grain slug.
I used 300 & 420 cast in mine  mostly with 3031.I warn you that recoil will get PUNISHING real quick with the 45-70. I killed a few deer with it before I traded it ,now I'm regretting it. With a 4x scope it was VERY accurate for a dozen shots or so then i started to flinch. I used 350 hornady's in it too.Never found a load it didn't like. Some powder bullet combinations require a dacron wad for best results. Get a cast bullet book from Lyman and read it. The 45-70 is quite flexible, and can get mean in a hurry.

I have the lyman #48.it doesn't list my fav 45/70 powders unique and AA5744 with cast bullets but does list good data with the jacketed bullets.
I want to start about 1000 fps with "my" cast bullets and work up from there.

how long is that barrel without the brake? The Lyman 3rd edition shows 10gr unique = 939 fps and 17.5gr=1411 fps. 24" barrel and 366 gr PB bullet.
These loads REQUIRE a dacron wad(about 1 grain) to keep the powder in position. Maybe you could email the factory about using AA 5744 in the 45-70 with cast bullets.

Please note that the above is obsolete information and is one reason it is wise not to use old data.  Lyman no longer recommends, nor do they list, any loads with fillers.  Too many problems, risks of barrel ringing, and the fillers are not needed anyway.  The #48 Manual lists a few .45-70 loads with Unique, all without fillers of any kind.

I use both Unique and BlueDot in my T/C .45-70 and accuracy is great without fillers, expecially with BD.  I get better accuracy with Unique by tipping up the muzzle prior to the shot, BD seems less position-sensitive.  I use standard primers only.

Pete, be careful using loads posted on the Internet. You best bet is to buy a reloading manual with load data for the contender handguns. If you ask for load data double check it. Also what works good in one gun does not guarantee you will have the same success. Good luck. :D

thanks redhawk1.good info.
I have been a avid reloader/caster now for close to 30 years but just new to the contenders.
the lyman 48 shows only one load with unique and thats a 400 gr jsp.and that load doesn't use any fillers.
I am into 45/70's also have a ruger #1 and a 1895ss marlin and just thought a contender would be alot of fun and recoil :-) .
thanks to all for the great info.

I would check the Alliant Powder website.
2400, which is a pistol powder, gives excellent results with low pressure.
AA 5744 is another.
Both of these will give you great flexability.
Unique is another favorite for lower velocity/pressure loads.

I picked up a jug of trail boss this weekend to give it a try with the 45/70.that said the doc doesn't want me shooting any 45/70 for a bit as I had heart surgery 3 weeks ago  .
so it will be a good month or so before I get to try it out.I will post a range report when I do.
thanks to all for the info.
