Well, I have a Standard contour 243 barrel and it shoot's great!
I have only shot 1 brand through it so far-Winchester Super-X 100gr PSP- And my largest group was 1 1/4" My smallest being just over 1/2".
Some here have reported problems with their 243s.
I believe a lot of this to be different factors, like forearm pressure and stye of forarm. Also lock up, all my barrels require a little force to close or snap them up, and fit very tight and snug while closing. Some just take a little attention to detail, to get shooting.
Though I don't dismiss all claims by anymeans. Do a search and you'll find plenty hits on the 243 Handi.
It's a great caliber, and many loads offered for it.
I am very happy with mine.

Dixiedog,

I have the .50 cal/.243 combo and I am well pleased with both. I took 5 deer and 3 coyotes with the .243 using the new Federal Fusion 95 grain. Nothing ran more than 15 yards with this caliber and round. As a matter of fact, 3 of the 5 deer I took fell where they stood and all three coyotes hit the ground like a ton of bricks. It is a very effective combo on the deer and coyotes. In my opinion it is the pefect deer caliber for the deer in my neck of the woods. My largest deer last year was around 185lbs and the smallest around 80lbs. This combo performed great on all size deer and coyotes. You can't go wrong in my book going with the .243.

Here is my baby

A 243 will do just about anything you could want a rifle for in North America.  It does however have a well earned reputation as a fickle round to find a good load for, and re-loading for it can be a trying experience.  If you get one that shoots good you will be a very happy person.  Larry

The24"  bull barreled 243 is a great little shooter...I was extreamly please with the consistancy and accuracy of mine with the 95grain Nosler Silver Ballistic tips and reloader 22...all groups fired with this was under moa...and since I sold it to mitchell..he has it shooting 1/4" groups with Varget and the 55 grain  SBT's...The ultra lights can be a major pain in the butt..but I never had a bit of problem with my bull barrel..

If I were going to buy another and keep it as a 243...I would get the 24" bull barrel ...

.243 ultra
« Reply #5 on: April 26, 2006, 02:54:08 AM »
I have a .243 ultra, couldn't be happier.  Mine shoots outrageously well.  And here is the kicker, it loves the cheapest federal blue box ammo in 100gr.  I don't measure groups, but I can put a three shot group inside the 4" circle of a paper target at about 265yds (longest shot I can get on my little farm in a safe direction).  If that isn't good enough, you aren't a hunter, you are a shooter.

Good luck, I think you will love it if you get one.

That is great dixiedog, you will be as hooked on that 17hmr as you will on the 243 Handi. I have heard that that store is awsome. A little too far for me to go, but I have the one in Memphis I shop at frequently. I recently went into the new one in Pearl, MS. HUGE!!!!. It is one impressive store to say the least. Hey, congrats on the new 17hmr, you will love it. And the 243 in the Handi is one bad little mother! :D

DON'T DO IT!!!  DON'T DO IT!!!  :D

I know you will make the right decision for you Hawk, but I was shooting a 7mm before I got my .243. I will never go any larger than a .243 for whitetail again. And the lighter recoil makes it more enjoyable to just take to the range and print on paper.

My 243 shoots handloaded 85 gr Sierra HPBT into less than an inch at 100 yards. It will also shoot the 100 Gr Winchester Silver box into an inch at 100 yards.

I like it!
