OK.....I finally hit my screens.
« on: May 24, 2006, 03:01:36 PM »
I'm such an idiot.....Saturday I went to the range with some new 68gr loads for my REM LVSF.  I set up my ohler chronograph with its two sky screens and wham.....I hit both screens.  Seems the first shot didn't register so I lowered the POI and over compensated.  First time since I bought the damn thing in the 80's.

Question.....anyone have the web site for Ohler????  Can't seem to find it and I'm kinda worried they are out of business.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Your not an idiot.....and your not the first to hit a screen, and you sure won't be the last........

Just be glad it was the screen instead of something really important.......

Also, be glad that you've proven yourself human and capable of making a mistake just like all the rest of us.......The way I figure it, the only people that don't make mistakes are the ones that don't do anything.......

It's just stuff........they'll make more......don't sweat the small things as life's to short anyway..........

Duuuusty........snort and chortle!  Yep...I'm such an idiot.

Quick....yep...I suppose spelling it right would help...one more thing in along list of disasters....what a day.

Victor....for years I'd let guys shoot bullets, arrows, pellets and even let a guy try golf balls (didn't work, he couldn't get over the screens).  I was sooo careful!  I'spose I was due!

Thanks everyone!!!

Hey Quickdtoo,

Looked at the diagram on the rimfire site.  I think I can rig up something similar.  The Oelher has the 4' pipe suspended between two light stands that positions a skyscreen on each end with blackened venetian blind slats and translucent tape light difusers that fit into each sky screen.  I then have to run a wire to the chronograph which is on the bench next to me.  I'm going to get a sturdy camera tripod and some steel or metal rod or bar or something to permanantly hold the screens into place.  I'll post a pic when I get my new screens.

A chrony seems a lot easier to be sure!!!

I have never shot my chrony to bits, but I have shot a dent into it.

Anyone want to ask how?  Welllll, you asked for it!  :P

I was experimenting with my .22 Hornet and some fandangled ideas of mine.  I wanted a quiet, powerful-enough-but-still-low-powered load to shoot squirrels with.  I purchased some pointed airgun pellets (.22 cal of course), and put about .6grs or so of Trail Boss powder underneath them.  It spat them out around 600-650fps, but one shot I fired a little too low...and this was point blank. Thankfully, there is no damage to the sensor, but now there is a dent where there wasn't in the metal frame.   :wet:

Truth of the matter is I've done it twice!!  First time I  hit one of the side screens but the next time I nailed one of sensors.  "Uh hello?  Uh, yeah, have I reached the HELP I'VE SHOT MY CHRONO HOT LINE?"!!! :-D

I had to replace a sceen on my oehler - but I haven't shot one yet. My dog ate the screen - ok, she didn't eat it - she just used it as a chew toy. I had forgotten about that - Ah pleasant memories - She and her sister both died a few years back - they were old dogs then and she had that expensive chew toy when she was a pup. Thanks for the memories!

Now tell us the important stuff like what cartridge did you use? What bullets? Where was your shot placement? Did you get two exit holes  or did you recover the bullet and if so what percentage of weight was remaining? Did they go down in a heap or did you have to track them?

My desire to be in the company of rothers is fullfilled!!!  I hereby declare us the keepers of the screens...or at least...the keepers of extra screens!!!

Anyway.....kenscot...as I said...I was shoot'n a 223.  A rem700 LVSF and I used 68gr hornady bthp match over 25gr of RL-15. The fitst shot didn't register.  The second shot tubmled!!!!   That's when I assisinated the screens.  Good news though.  For only $90 I can get NEW screens!!!!!

Don't feel too bad.  Stuff happens.  I took out my first chrony shooting 12 ga. sabot slugs over it.  They were the hour-glass shaped ones with the two-sabot.  It's amazing what damage a little piece of plastic can do at 10 feet.  But, the good news is that I replaced that basic Chrony with the Gamma model with remote display.  (I don't shoot any thing with sabots over this one.)

Welcome to the Club!

I've shot mine with the following cartriges:

First time:  44 Mag (Dead Centered it and completly destroyed it)
Second time:  .223 (Creased the top)
Third time:  .223 again (Second crease in the top).
Yes gents...that's three times on the same chrono.  Competition Electronics completely replaced/rebuilt it the first time.  I think the second crease has finally got it to the point where it needs to go back to the factory again.

Ah, yes a group I fit into. I shot one of my Oehler screens a couple of years ago. I had the older Skyscreen II's and was working up loads for my contender 300 whisper in my back yard. I was shooting off hand (I know I was asking for it) on about my 7th or 8th shot I hit the first screen which was no match for a 125 gr ballistic Tip at close to 2000 fps.
Oh well at least now I have the skyscreen III's which give me a larger shooting area.

After watching a friend shoot his new Chrony, I decided there was a better way. I set a small bullseye target just to the side of my chronograph and would shoot a couple rounds first to see where they are hitting. Things were going quite well for several years. One day I was testing a pistol with a red dot. The front projection lens broke loose and made my next round shoot about 6" low. Yup, you guessed it .... drilled it right through the center. No more BSA red dots for me!
