1895c full octagon to half octagon
« on: May 11, 2006, 08:37:51 AM »
Everyone,

I have an 1895 coming in to a store in a week or so and would like to maybe get the barrel reshaped to a half octagon half round profile, has anyone done this or seen it done? Do you think it is possible? What would you do?

I am also going to shorten the magazine to a half magazine or smaller.  The plan is to get it looking sort of like a Teddy Rosevelt custom Winchester.  A set of Treebone Carving stocks are a possibility also, to help it get a more authentic style stock.

Let me know what you think of my plan and share your own experiences and insights too.

Thanks, -TC-

Reshaping the barrel should be fairly easy.  Have your gunsmith remove it and chuck it in the lathe, and he should be able to turn it down to the diameter of the flats.  Or, you can draw file it by hand like was done in the old days.

The magazine should be doable also, maybe a little challenge....

:cb2: I saw a limited run of those a few years back. I am almost sure it was Marlin. It held 8 rounds instead of 9 like the full octagon Cowboy does today.

You'll spend some $$, especially if you change out the wood, but you will have something few others have. I love half mag tubes. Go for it! And post some pics.
