I frequently visit local gun shops and gun shows here and lately there's more of the younger crowd buying guns now more than ever its the 21 to 30 crowd i'm talking about. Its everything from AR15's to Bushmasters and handguns too at gun shops and at gun shows its the same crowd looking for larger mags and accessories for everything.  At gun shows and gun shops its mainly the younger crowd and the older crowd mainly now. For many years its only been the older crowd until after 9/11. I even see Mom and Pop shooting handguns at the local range and there a hoot to watch too.  Mom blasting away with a 38 revolver and Pop is shooting what looks to be a 9mm too and believe it or not they switch handguns too. They look to be in their 70's.  I see old ladies in there 60's looking to get consealed carry permits too.  America sure has changed since 9/11 if most haven't noticed it yet.

S.Sumner I think your right silently america is arming themselves and most of it is going unnoticed too. I don't know if everyone is scared or wants to be ready if something goes down or there just worried and they feel safer armed.  I just hope they learn how to handle the gun properly and can shoot it.  We don't need a cross between F troop and Mckales navy "Parker" and Barney Fife it the crap goes down.

When i see the youngsters going to buy a $1,200 rifle in .223rem I steer them towards a Saiga in .223rem for $300.

The "Youngsters" around here are AK 47 fanatics.
And yes, I too am seeing a lot of the 21 to 30 YO crowd buying weapon.
Bad thing is they try and hold and aim them like they see in the movies,
"Boys in Tha' Hood Style" I try to help.... Sad thing around here is that lots of the youth come from broken homes, and they didn't have a father around to teach them these things.

Generally I am not a panick buyer either, however, with the increases in fuel prices alone, ammo prices have to go up...Aim Surplus is advertising that they expect Brown Bear 7.62x39 ammo in late April or early May but the price alredy advertised is 139.99 per case plus shipping ...and that is about 30-bucks per case more than before, if not 40....and also, World Scrap Metal Prices are soaring....copper is up to 2 bucks per pound scrap!!!!......steel has gone from 30-dollars a ton to 210-per ton!....shotgun "shot" is experiencing increases every month .....therefore, before prices for ammo and the fuel to ship it go up any further, I think I will buy at today's prices....and continue to shop little out of the way shops for bargains....buy it cheap and stack it deep.

Talked to salesman at Gander mt. He said thier ammo prices are to increase 3 times. It already did the first time some of it as much as 33%. He did not know when the next two increases are coming. He said copper is $6 lb plus the armed services are buying alot of ammo a this is heilping to drive the pricrd up. As far as the 50000 chinese. 50000 against what 150 million armed americans.  
Of coarse when we sign and radify the UN treaty to ban all private ownership of small arms our gov will probably have them come here wearing thier little blue UN helmets to take them away.

I may sound like a conspiracy theorist, but the facts just keep supporting
all the things I try to post here! I am normally not one to be easily panicked, But I do not want to get caught with my pants down around my ankles either. With an election coming up, I am not taking any chances!
If the Democrats re-gain control of the senate and house, what is the first thing they are going to try to sneak back under the table? "MORE GUN CONTROL" Don't anyone be fooled, All it takes is the stroke of a pen
and about ten seconds for the United States Constitution to be pissed away. It came very, very close to happening with several add in's to the assault weapons ban. Such as the tax on ammunition. I am talkin a fifty dollar tax on every single box of ammo regardless of caliber or box quantity. I am not waiting for a $1.50 box of .22 rimfire to cost $51.50.
I think I will put some away for a rainy day instead. When I have to build an outside storage building for my own surplus, I may feel more comfortable about it.

The price of copper has skyrocketed.  I had a electrical contractor tell me that if he were to melt down penneys they contain more value as scrap metal than as legal tender.

We also know that gasoline and diesel fuel prices have skyrocketed.  One of the things I learned long ago about purchasing military surplus ammo was to buy in bulk at gun shows and avoid shipping costs.  With high fuel prices shipping from the foreign country source to the US has to be much higher and shipping from the importer to the distributor or retail source also has to be higher.  That will change the economics of offering milsurp ammo for sale by another country.  Combine that with higher scrap metal prices and you could easily imagine some countries finding alternate and more financially rewarding than shipping their surplus ammo half way around the world.

On the other hand, I have lived through two "crisis shortages of 7.62x39 ammo."  One when Bill Clinton turned off the importation of Chi-Com SKS/MAK ammo.  The other not long ago, when it just dired up for a while.  Luckily, when this latest crisis started, I had around 1400 rounds of the stuff in battle packs sitting above my gun safe.    I also have some reloadable brass and reloading dies for my 7.62x39.  

It may take a while, but military surplus ammo goes in cycles by caliber.

I was thinking about putting macroni in empty mayo jars to store it too out of the paper boxes.  I have home made tomato's canned so thats a good meal too.
