300 mag.
« on: April 29, 2006, 05:58:05 PM »
I just bought  a 300 mag barrel for my thompson encore, it's the 28" pro hunter. I need some info on what bullet to shoot for Tennessee Whitetails.  I would like a light and very fast bullet that does alot of damage, and makes a big hole, LOL. My shots are under 200 yards. What do ya'll shoot in your 300?

I have great results with 165 gr. Barnes X bullets.  Also the Nosler 165 gr. Nosler partitions.  :D
If  you're going to make a hole, make it a big one.

If your looking for mushy purple meat destruction, a 150 grn rapid expansion bullet that sheds alot of energy will do it.

I like 180s for mags.........

This is my load for 300win mag , Winchester large rifle primer's , Nosler 165 ballistic tip , IMR 4350 70GR. work up to this load as 71 gr's was showing pressure signs in my rifle. Nosler ballistic tip may not be the bullet of choice for heavy boned game but this combo works great for whitetails. I have shot deer with it and they never took a step , just went straight down.

I shot a deer at over 200 yds with 180 Hornady bullets with my 300 and that deer went down and got up went 10 yds and droped dead. My using the 180 at 3060 fps made the meat where the bullet entered all blood shot. Alot of the fast bullets will do that espectly the 180gr bullets. So I don't use that rifle for deer under 300 yds. with a 180 gr bullet. :D

I've shot deer with 180 and 165 gr Winchester Failsafes.  I've been pleased with the result although I don't generally deer hunt with my 300.  Guys will have you believe that the whole back side of the deer will be destroyed, and this is not the case... I cannot see a visible difference in meat damage with a 300 vs a 30-06 or 30-30.  Sometimes the cynic in me suggests that those people have pre-concieved notions about all "magnum" rounds.

I try and always shoot for the front shoulder, so they will drop where they stand. I don't worry about the damage it does to the to the shoulder, the more the better.

Check out the ballistic coefficient of the 180 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip. I took a number of Wisconsin whitetail with this bullet loaded at near max. It really shines in the 300 mag. Retains energy and velocity with incredible terminal performance.
