Light 357mag loads for a rifle.
« on: March 25, 2003, 09:17:48 AM »
I am looking for some357 mag  loads that will go about 900 to 1000 fps from a 20 inch barrel.  It is also required that they be very accurate.  I would like to be under 2 inches at 100 meters.  I prefer to shoot my own cast bullets but can go with good lead bullets from a reliable supplier.  I prefer to not use jacketed bullets unless it is a last resort.

Thanks,  Sixgun
You can only hit the target if the barrel is pointed in the right direction when the bullet leaves the barrel.

2 inches or under at 100 meters might be a little optimistic in expectation for a lever action carbine, especially if it has issue sights.  Most shooters are happy with that at 50 yards.  However, try 4 to 4.5 gr of Bullseye.  I use 4.5 with Lyman's 358458 or 358156 cast a little soft and lubed as cast at .358.  They run at 1195 fps out of a Marlin Cowboy with 24" barrel.  The 358156 has the accuracy edge, probably because of the GC, going pretty consistantly at 3 MOA.  The Marlin has a post front and Lyman receiver sight.  Have not shot jacketed in it so can't help you there.

I've had excellent results with the Lyman 168 grain Keith bullet sized .358, but I've been pushing them a bit faster you are interested in.

I did chronograph some .38 Specials out of a 22 inch barrel recently and can tell you that it takes very little powder to get bullets into the 800 to 900 fps range. The classic target load of 3.0 grains of Bullseye under 148 grain wadcutters ran 860. 150 grain SWC from an RCBS mould ran about the same and I think I had 4.0 grains of Unique under those.

Sixgun,
You can get that kind of accuracy with two bullets at that velocity that I know of for sure. The bullets are:

1. Speer 180 grain rifle bullet (flat point) loaded long (seated to the cannelure) behind 15 grains of H110.

2. Hornady 180 grain spire point rifle bullet seated in the cannelure in front of 14.9 grains of H110

These loadings are too long for revolvers and won't feed in most of the carbines from the magazine but can be single loaded in carbines and work well (the best) in single shots.

Hodgdon, Lyman, Speer, Sierra, Hornady = reliable resources
so and so's pages on the internet = not reliable resources
Alway check loads you find on the internet against manuals.
NEVER exceed maximum listed loads.

You guys have given me some things to start with.

I'll give you some more info to go on.  I have mounted a Lyman Receiver sight on this gun and have shot some impressive scores with this sight on my Rossi 92 in 44 mag.

I have cast some bullets from all of my 35 cal molds, which consist of a Lee 148gr wc, a Lee 166gr swc, and a Lyman 150gr swc Keith type bullet.
I used a fairly soft mixture with range lead from an indoor range where most of the guns have been 22LRs with just enough tin to fill the molds out.

I will be useing this gun for Cowboy Silhouette.  The Chickens are at 40 meters and the Rams are 100 meters.  Target damage is a big concern.  That is why I need the low volicity and soft cast bullets.

By the way, I shot this gun in a match last Saturday with a bunch of 38 specials that I loaded over 10 years ago and won the match.  I didn't even have my Receiver sight installed yet.  I don't plan on that happening again so I am working up a good load.

Have you slugged the bore of that Rossi? The last one I had measured .355" - perfect for 9mm bullets. By far the most accurate bullet I tried in it is the Lee 148gr. 9mm roundnose slug. It would keep most shots under an inch at 50 yards easy. Try loading it over about 4-4.5gr. Bullseye and see what you get. It's plenty heavy to take the rams at 100M.

Sixgun... what reloading manuals are you going to be working from for this proposed load? I have some things to offer, but they may be redundant if you have the same data...
I want to finish well
I want to end this race

I have Lyman#47, Speer 9 thru 13, Hornady, Load books, Richard Lee's book, Laser Cast and maybe a few more.  Most of the light loads are faster than I want to shoot.

I went out this weekend and got really good groups shooting a Lee 166SWC with soft lead and 4.5 gr of Bullseye.  Problem was, I got my Chrony set up and couldn't find the battery.  Left it on my loading bench so I don't know how fast they were going.  50 yard group of 5 shots, all touching in a neat little circle, shot offhand, found a good place to shoot but nothing to us for a rest.
