gas checks for .41 Mag bullets?
« on: March 28, 2006, 05:07:46 PM »
I have noticed that no one offers gas checks in .41 caliber, just .416..which I'm guessing is for .416 Rigbys and the like.  Does anyone even offer a .41 mould for gas checked bullets?  I have purchased some 265 grainers for my .414 SuperMag that were checked, but haven't seen a cataloged mold with checks.

According to Lyman when I called them a while back they said to use the 416 g/c' s. Have never tryed them but have seen the same info on other sites.

Lloyd is correct they just don't fit properly on bullets from lyman molds. I have to wonder if somebody isn't making them though. I bought some commercial 235 gr hardcast somewhere and they definitely were not the hornady 416 gas checks on them.
Just another worthless opinion!!

Lyman dropped their good plain base #410459 several years ago which left only their #410610 in the line. They also made gas checks to fit it. Now I see the bullet mold (410610) is still offered but no checks for it. That does make me wonder?????

What would be nice is if Lyman would bring back that 410459; that's the mold I prefer anyway and it would solve the gas check problem!

I will second the Gator checks, I just got 2k for the .41 from him and 3k of .30 and they are first class.

The Gator gaschecks come in 3 flavors for the 41:

1.  410-397 meant for Lyman shanks of 397 diameter.  Meant to be
sized to 410.  This check is paper thin because the shank is so
     large.

2.  410-378 meant for NEI, MM molds, or those having a shank
diameter of 378.  Meant to be sized to 410 or larger.  This check
is as thick as the case neck is on a 308W.  This is the go-to
check for any custom mold ordered.  About all of the commercial
     castors use this check.

3.  416-393 meant for the 416 caliber rifles, where the boolits are
     sized to around 416.

4.  All of these checks are the crimp-on type, and the crimping ridge
is quite substantial when compared to Hornady.
