Thats correct, you can only shoot what is marked on the barrel. If its not marked for 3" shells DONT USE THEM!

Either barrel will fit but you can only shoot what the receiver was originally set up for.
If it started as a 2 3/4 you can only shoot 2 3/4.
If the receiver is a magnum then the barrel will dictate which shells you can shoot.
I use a 2 3/4" barrel on my Rem 1100 to get it to cycle trap loads. They either have 2 gas holes or 1. But not an issue with 870s.

870 barrels are 870 barrels, and they will fit on any 870.  The round you can shoot is the minimum of the two *receiver and barrel* and if that minimum is 2.75, then only 2.75" shells, IF 3" then 2.75 and 3.  If both for 3.5, then you can shoot all sizes of rounds.

I've got an older 870 Wingmaster and I noticed that there is a shop, in Minnesota I believe, that advertises they can convert an 870 from 2 3/4" to 3". They are a Remington warranty repair shop if I'm not mistaken. I found out about them on the Remington web page.

I was thinking about getting a 3" barrel with a RemChoke and then sending my receiver off for this modification. At $65 it seems like a pretty good deal. Has anyone tried this?

The name of the outfit is Ahlmans and their web page is:

What are you wanting to do with it? To be honest there is not a real huge advantage to shooting 3 inch shells. You can find many 2 3/4 inch shells with simular ballistics if you look around. Both in shot and slugs.

The length of the shell really doesn't mean much any more. The only advantage to a 3 inch shell is if you are hunting turkey or water fowl you will be able to get more shot in there, like a 2 oz. load. But you can get pretty close to that with some 2 3/4 inch rounds.

For instance fiocchi makes a pheasant load that will shoot 1 3/8 oz of shot at 1485 fps, and it's a 2 3/4 inch shell!

Ulness you are goose hunting or trying to shoot turkeys at longer ranges I would not bother with 3 inch or 3.5 inch magnum shells. There is SO much selection in the 2 3/4 inch offerings it will cover just about anything.

I pretty much agree with you Paul. I want to use 3" for exactly the cases you cited, turkey and geese. I get by with my Skeet-choked 26" 2 3/4" barrel for 90% of my shooting, but I want to stretch the capabilities of my old 870 Wingmaster a little further instead of picking up another shotgun for those rare instances when I just need a little more oomph.

I think I'll give Ahlmans a call and ask exactly what's involved in that conversion.

If it's a legitimate conversion I'd consider it. When I put a 3" BBL on my 2 3/4" reciever I wondered what the difference was????? The reciever seemed to be the exact same size :? I have heard it's somehting internal not sure.

I would get hem to explain everything in detail they plan on doing to your gun.

I once compared the exploded parts list in the manual for a 2 3/4" 870 and a 3" 870.  The main difference is the ejector.  Their are a couple of other parts that are different but they all have to do with the ejection.  It is an easy conversion that other places have done over the years.

it's going to be mostly a home defence gun, so i dont need three inch shells. i might use it for close up hog's or deer, but i dont think a hog can tell 2 3/4 from 3 inches!?
i just wanted to know the mechanics of the barrels and recievers.
 thank you guy's!
