Savage 24F over and under rifle and shotgun combos??
« on: May 22, 2006, 01:17:32 PM »
Anyone own/shot one of those Savage synthetic stocked 24F's that are a rifle and shotgun combo? Heck for that matter anyone own/shot the older .22lr/.410 wood stocked combo's? Is it a marriage of the good points of both or is it one of those ideas that seem to be good on paper but fail in real life? Thanks in advance.

I had one over 30 years ago with a .22 WMR over 20 ga and I loved it. I used it mostly for squirrels and it was deadly on them, one barrel or the other was always just right for most any shot presented. I used it for turkey hunting and even shot doves with it. If I were to see another like it in a shop or at a gunshow I'd pick it up in a heart beat.

Had one. That`s the operative word here. It was a 410/22. Plastic stock type.
Didn`t know what i had at the time (be worth something now) but it shot fine, action was good, all around handy combo.
Sure would like to have it back.

I have a .223 over 12 ga 24f (synthetic).  I had to cut about an inch off the stock to get a better fit.  When I first bought it I put a 6X Redfield on it.  The rifle barrel shot real well, with a slightly stiff trigger.  But the shotgun pattern was very low in the scope.  I eventually took the scope off and just used the rifle sights that came on it.  Using it this way, with the rifle sighted dead on at 100 yds seems to keep the point of impact the same for the shotgun.  If you accidently try to shoot the rifle barrel with the push button safety on, it will cause the barrel selector to move to the shotgun position.  Then when you push the safety off and recock the hammer. it will shoot the shot gun barrel if you forget to move the selector back to the rifle postion.  Its a handy rifle, but I usually use my bolt action 223 for woodchucks.  I sort of wish I had bought the 30/30-12 guage model.  It would have been perfect for hunting in the Adirondacks deer/bear/grouse/snowshoerabbits.

Hi Frineds

I have a Savage 24F in 30/30 over 12 ga and it is one of my favorite guns. The 12 has a super tight choke for turkey hunting and reaching out for those squirrels in top of tall trees. Then the 30/30 is perfect for possible walk by deer. Love it and it is accurate to the letter.

I had a .410/.22 wooden stock model when I was teenager, wish I still had it! Saw a .357 mag/20 ga at a gunshow a year or so ago, I was tempted but they had a "collectors item" price tag on it.
