Breaking in my new 1712
« on: May 12, 2006, 03:33:31 AM »
I've just received my new Anschutz 1712 rifle.  Before I take it to the range I wanted to see what the members in the forum think about breaking in the rifle.  I've been getting a lot of conflicting advice, so I'm hoping people here can point me in the correct direction before I start shooting it.
  Any advice is greatly appreciated.

1.- Remove all cosmoline from the exterior surfaces.
2.- Run a couple of patches soaked with solvent through the bore.
3.- Run clean patches until the bore is clean.
4.- Adjust the trigger as you deem necessary.
4.- Install scope mounts as tight as you can get them.
5.- Install rings & scope tight, but do not over-tighten.
6.- Take the rifle to your nearest range, along with the ammo you intend to use on a regular basis.
7.- Shoot at least 10 rounds while you zero the scope settings.
8.- Your rifle is now "broken in"

Unlike center fire rifles, smallbore rifles only require a few fouling shots to get good precision out of them (accuracy is the ability of the rifle to shoot to point of aim, while precision is the rifle's ability to repeatedly shoot to the same point of impact when sighted at the same spot).

I hope this helps,

Jake,  everything you said is pretty much in line with good practice   However I have had at least one Anschutz that didn't start grouping well  untill I got about 500 rounds through it.  Why?  I don't know, but I've heard a few others make similar comments.  Some folks give up on a new barrel and have the rifle rebarreled before ever giving it a chance to shoot in.....
