WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush assured Mexican President Vicente Fox on Sunday he did not intend to militarize their countries' mutual border, but was considering sending National Guard troops there to temporarily support border control efforts.

"The president made clear that the United States considers Mexico a friend and that what is being considered is not militarization of the border, but support of border patrol capabilities on a temporary basis by National Guard personnel," White House spokeswoman Maria Tamburri said, describing a telephone conversation between Bush and his Mexican counterpart.

Fox "reached out" to Bush on Sunday to relay his concerns about the plan that is under consideration, Tamburri said.

Bush will deliver a televised address to the nation on immigration on Monday evening. The White House said last week he may propose deploying more National Guard troops along the 2,000-mile border to stop illegal immigration.

Fox's office said during the call Bush said the United States and Mexico were partners and friends, but a thorough immigration reform was needed to solve the problem between both countries.

The idea has also gotten a mixed reception on Capitol Hill, where some senators are worried that the National Guard is already stretched too thin to take on major additional duties.

White House National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley went on television Sunday to emphasize that no final decision on sending the troops had been made. He said the idea was to "provide a bit of a stopgap as the Border Patrol build up their capacity to deal with this challenge.

"This is something that's actually already being done. It's not about militarization of the border," Hadley said on CNN's "Late Edition."   Continued...

So what's wrong with militarization of the border?  It's our border don't we have the right to protect it from illegal entry?  So what if we piss Fox off?  What will Mexico do... kick all the US manufacturers out of the country?  That would only hurt him and help us.   I know, he will stop shipping us watermelons and lemons.  Why is it so important to kiss up to Mexico?  What do they have to offer us (besides cheap labor)?  Am I missing something.  I think that the Mexican border would be a great training ground for our troops.

Bush will propose window-dressing.

He will deploy National-Guard forces long enough for the political heat to die down and then it will once more be business as usual.  Illegal immigrants will be welcomed, protected, and coddled, and American citizens concerned about protecting the border will once again be drawn as "vigilantes" and alarmists.

He will wait for the attention of the American people to be draw off target by some created and insignificant news event or alarm, and then he will once again revert to his plan to deliver America to her enemies behind the Peoples back.

Bush is willfully failing to perform his duties according to the Constitution, and fully intends to betray the trust of, and to defy the will of, the American People.

He must be stopped.

They may talk of a "New Order" in the  world, but what they have in mind is only a revival of the oldest and worst tyranny.   No liberty, no religion, no hope.   It is an unholy alliance of power and pelf to dominate and to enslave the human race.

The reason we are pandering to Fox and the Mexicans is because of oil. Mexico is the leading importer of oil to the US. Canada is second. Saudi Arabia is only third.

Here is a report on the top importers:
http://www.eia.doe.gov/pub/oil_gas/petroleum/data_publications/company_level_imports/current/import.html

The Chinese are currently trying to contract to purchase oil from Mexico and other South American countries which will sharply diminish our supply and further raise our oil prices.

Piss Fox off and you may be paying $10 a gallon for gas!

Don't worry about it, just keep driving your 4X4 SUVs and blame someone else.

A program akin to putting a man on the moon should have been enacted 5 years ago??????????????????????

It was. Just as that was done in Hollywood they also made a movie about better energy sources.

Couldn't agree more. Bush's proposal takes full effect in 2008. Don't tell me that it takes that long to get 6,000 troops on the border. If you compare it to how fast the money found its way to New Orleans, you can come to the conclusion that Bush and Congress haven't promised anything, and don't plan on doing anything.

I'm wondering if any other forum-goers in the Connecticut area caught the heated exchange between radio host Jim Vicevich and a woman caller who attempted to invoke imagery of the Kent State incident as an analogy to what will happen with Nat. Guard troops on our southern border. When Jim pointed out that border patrol is already armed and there have yet been no mass shootings, she became even more emotional and irrational. The call ended with her calling the host a jerk, and hanging up.

We all know darn well why congressional and presidential ratings are so low, but we're going to have to fight our way past the bleeding hearts, and even then, anything we get will be watered down. God bless the Minute Men.
