:o Bible bans in Victorian hospitals
May 14, 2006
BIBLES have been banned in Victorian hospitals and some schools out of concern of offending non-Christians.
Almost all Melbourne's main hospitals have withdrawn Bibles and several schools no longer hand out free Bibles.

Royal Melbourne spokesman Rod Jackson-Smith said the Bible was not banned, but said: "We don't (have Bibles in each room) any more."

"Because we have so many people from different religious backgrounds it is considered inappropriate. It is also an infection control measure."

Hospitals that have removed Bibles include the Royal Melbourne, Royal Children's, Austin, The Alfred, Monash Medical Centre, Box Hill, Maroondah, Dandenong and Casey.

The Gideons International Australia, which gives free Bibles to hospitals, schools and motels, has blamed it on political correctness.

Gideons' executive director, Trevor Monson, told the Sunday Herald Sun: "The reason most often given is that 'we are a multicultural organisation and we don't want to offend anyone'."

Mr Monson said Gideons had received letters from people who sought comfort in the Bible while ill in hospital.

A Catholic church spokesman said the argument that Bibles could offend non-Christians was "silly".

"To say that other faiths might be offended if a Bible is there is nonsense," Archdiocese of Melbourne auxiliary bishop Christopher Prowse said.

As a Christian I am offended that Bibles are being restricted from Victorian Hospitals!  But I guess that it has become inconsequential to offend Christians just so long as nobody else gets offended.

How about this one ms. The fruits and fairies on the left coast of the US want to have the words "mother" and "father" removed from school text books because they are "too gender specific".   What is this world coming to?

Don't make it out to be what it isn't.  They're not forbidding bibles, they're just not providing them anymore.  Note what the spokesman said.  Just because the hospital isn't sponsoring Christianity anymore doesn't make you guys a victim of hatred.  Would you suggest that they have a bookshelf in every room with a couple different versions of the bible, the Koran, a buddist text, etc etc etc.  :-)   If you're that devout, bring your own Bible so that you can have your own bookmarks and notes.

P.S. I do think the Father/Mother thing is absurd tho... We need to invade Kommefornia like we did Iraq and take that state back from whatever alien force has had it for the last 50 years.

Haywood. The hospitals never did provide Bibles, the Gideons did.  The Hospital is baning the Gideons from placing Bibles in the rooms. If other religious org's wish to place their religious text in hospitals I say why not.  The true Word will stand up to any of them.

You guys are missing one important point: infection control.  Germs can live on any book, including a Bible.  It is far safer for people to have and read their own, with their own germs on it than to catch something else from the Bible placed in the room.

That's hogwash. Germs need a warm, moist environment to survive.  Books are not generally moist or warm for that matter. So I don't by their story.
