That would depend on who you ask :)  :)  :)

Yes..the quality of rifle you will get for the amount of money you will spend is pretty darn impressive...A-lot of folks will till you not to buy one and just get a Savage bolt action instead..They will tell you the Handi's are for " people who tinker with their rifles..and won't give good accuracy with out modifying them a-lot..I won't tell you that..I will tell you there are different degrees of accuracy folks accept as ok..some prefere them to shoot all into the same hole at 100 yards..others say things like   minute of deer ..and such..it will be up to you to deceide how accurate is accurate enough for you...and we have a great FAQ sticky to help you along the way at the top of the page..I'll will also tell you to go right ahead and buy yourself a nice Ultra..odds are certainly in your favour of getting a real good shooter.I have several that will shoot right up there with bolt guns costing thousands more than what I have invested in them, and the amount of extra effort was minimal to get them to be tack drivers..Here's my 280 barrel and the 10shot group I got with Remington 140 grain factory load at 100 yards..

I spent a total of 2 hours cleaning it thoughly..and no o-ring mods on it..

Now...if you are trying to deciede between a bolt action and a single shot..you have to ask yourself if your ready to hunt with a single shot over a bolt gun.Patience and practice are the key words for going afield with a single instead of a repeater..but..if you elect the single shot..you will learn to make the first shot count...and after all..that is the whole she-bang anyway..

Anyway..if you buy one..let us know and we'll go from there..

Good Luck :D

I was holding dead on the center bulls eye while chronographing both the Remington factory 140 core locks and the Federal 140 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claws..Velocities are very close for the 2 loads..This is where both wound up hitting the target.

I wasn't expecting the Remington factory load to quite so accurate..but..I should have known it would be...since most folks who have this barrel swear by them..

As Mac said, it really depends on what you want and what $$ you want to spend. If you want a Bolt, then get a bolt. The Savages are great rifles out of the box and are an easy platform for rebarreling in the future.
If you want a Single shot, then the NEF/H&R's are excellent little rifles with the added versitility of interchangable barrels on the fly. Like all manufactures you will find some rifles that require more "attention" to get them shooting as desired than others. NEF/H&R puts out a LOT of rifles and if I'm not mistaken is the biggest manufacture of single shot rifles in the world, so your bound to get a few that need more "attention". And if it doesn't, then CS will take care of it...just be nice :)
Either way you won't go wrong, though the Handi is just so, well, Handi 8)  After you get 1 then you realize just how much so. Short, compact, great caliber selection, relitively light, simple, rugged, the list goes on...

I've bought an H&R ultra varmint about 5 years ago in .223 and I love it .
Nice cinnamin lam. wood and solidly build. It is a heavy rifle though but I don't mind that. Its mostly my groundhog gun. I have a cheap 6x24-40 bsa scope on it but it gets the job done.
