Sight removal ? for the Buff classic
« on: May 21, 2006, 08:04:46 AM »
I ordered the 17AHB Lyman 17A .404 High Front Sight 3/8 DT for my Buffalo Classic 45-70.  First off tell me that`s the right one. I also need to know how to remove the old and replace the new sight. Is this a simple tap out the old one and tap in the new one ? I tried to tap out the old one but it doesn`t seem to want to move so I stopped and decieded to ask before I damaged something.

That's how it comes out, they can be real tough, the smith that reamed mine to .45-120 ruined the hood removing the sight and had to buy me a new one. Seems to me it will come out best to the left, but don't quote me on that, it's been a while since I replaced mine with a .404".

Wayne York had a heck of a time getting the sight out of my .38-55 Target barrel so he could rebore/rechamber it, and he's a pro!!

I bought a brass drift punch that's made for dovetail sights, it works pretty good.

Ramp? The BC barrel dovetail is 3/8", the 3/8" dovetailed .404" 17AHB is the right sight, many of are using it. It may take some fitting of the sight base with a file to get a good fit so it fits in the dovetail without being cocked up in the front or rear, but it's the right sight.
