77 mark II scope ring fit
« on: July 04, 2006, 03:51:33 PM »
hi all, question for anybody that might know if the ruger low 77 rings will have enough clearance to mount a leupold 3-9x40 vxII scope? it came with medium height rings from the factory, but it seems like the scope has a little too much height right now with the supplied medium rings. thanks
btw, I forgot to mention it is an ultralight model rifle.

This doesn't exactly answer your question, but I had to share this story about Ruger scope rings:

I got my first Ruger early spring of this year.  I mounted the rings on the action and put my pointy, alignment dowels in to check the alignment before installing the scope.  To my horror, one ring was about 1/4" higher than the other.  "I can't lap that kind of misalignment out" I thought.  I read through the owner's manual (always a last resort) to see if I'd done anything wrong.  The manual was at best, vague and gave no indication I'd done anything improperly.  Steamed at Ruger, I got on their website to find a phone number or address to contact and let them know they'd screwed up and sent me mismatched rings.  While perusing their website I found some illustration stating that the higher ring should be mounted towards the front (or was it the back?).  Humbled by this new information, I returned to the basement (my place of refuge in our home) and switched the rings around.  They were perfectly aligned.  After a quick lapping, I installed the scope and boresighted.  Sure wish they had included that info about different height scope rings in the manual!

lol. I actually picked up on that for some reason. I had to sit there and look at the gun and look at the rings and look at the gun and look at the rings and try and figure out which one went where. ;D I have a 96/44 and the rings on it are both the same height.
