445 supermag
« on: July 15, 2006, 06:58:57 AM »
Has anyone rechambered their 44mag handi to 445? If so how does it shoot? I have been thinking
about doing this for a while but i am concerned with how it will affect 44mag performance. I reload
all my 44 ammo and have heard that you can use the same dies. Is this true? Any comments would
be appreciated.
                                                                                                                  Thanks

I see the search feature still isn't working, but if you go back about a year or so in the posts there was a lot of guys that reamed theirs out. I don't remember any of them being disappointed and most were very impressed.

I have no experience with the .445 but remember reading about it for quite a while. Just start by going back page by page, you will find all the information you are looking for, I'm sure.

You will want to go back to last year before this post, this post is about the return of the reamer. This poster is no longer here, but I am sure a few of the others are. Just wanted you to know how far back to go. Good luck in your search.

Another way to find info if you know who posted on a subject is to use the member list at the bottom of the index, the "search for users" does work, choose the member from the results, then hit the show last posts link at the bottom of their profile. Here's Ditchdigger's posts, he's probably one of the most experienced 445SM shooters here.

Just about everyone that has done the re-chamber is very pleased with the results , and yes you can use the 44 mag dies to load 445 SM , some even say that the 44 mag rounds shoot better in the 445 chamber .

In a rifle barrel the 445supermag gets very close to 45 70 and 444 Marlin loads. It does 1977 fps with 30.5 grs. of 296 and a 300 grs.bullet and 2146 fps with the 265 gr.bullet.Nearly everyone that has 1 and has chrono'ed the loads report there velocity's are within a few fps of my load's. Most of the guy's (12 of them) report less recoil with the 300 gr.XTP's at 1975 than the 300 gr.45 70 at the same speed. I think that the one's that have done the rechamber will all agree that it's a very worthwhile rechamber.  Digger

Thanks for the replies
I talked with the local smith yesterday he said it would have alot of recoil. Im not too woried about
the recoil as i can still shoot the 44mag loads for practice. Smith said he would check with the other
local smiths to see if anyone has a reamer. They use a trade system so there is more of a variety and it is cheaper for the customer. If someone has the reamer he said $40. If not i would have to buy the reamer and they do the rechamber for free but keep the reamer. I am planning on using it for a cow elk hunt this year.

I'd rent a reamer before I bought one, it'll cost about $35-$45 or so after paying shipping both ways, they charge an $85 refundable deposit, also. I rented a .35 cal throating reamer from 4D, cost was a bit less than a chamber reamer. DRinks rented a .445SM reamer from them, also.
