BC stock finish...
« on: May 27, 2006, 07:19:25 PM »
I recently bought a BC stock set for a 357 Max rifle I'm building on an older Topper frame. I don't know about anyone else, but to me, the finish leaves something to be desired. This stock is beautiful wood, but you'd never know just how nice it really is with the finish H&R put on it. The finish is "plasticy" looking, unevenly applied, and seems to have some kind of a tint in it that washes out the true appearance of the walnut.

I knew I'd seen a similar looking finish somewhere before, and I just remembered where....

To me, a classy looking stock like this is just begging for a nice oil finish, and that is what it will have once I strip off the original goop.

And Phillips head screws for the nice color-case buttplate and forearm hanger??? Oh no, I don't think so....

I have 4 BC/Target stock sets, none look as bad as the one you show, I don't think very many look that bad, here's one of mine.

I agree, what you have there is the worst looking finish I have ever seen on a BC or TDC NEF walnut stock!!! Send it back the the factory, someone sure fouled up on it....<><.... :?

The stock is actually very nice, the bottom has good figure full length. I stripped the original finish off and will blend in some flat spots and waves they left on the surface of the wood. The butt plate was also fitted badly (Off center and gaps at heel and toe that I could slip a business card under). The plastic piece on the forend was screwed on crooked, but that will be fixed when I replace it with a new steel one.

After stripping I could see why they used the tinted finish - An old woodworker's practice when making furnature with mis-matched color on individual pieces. It works to make pieces match better, but tinted finishes can wash out the true look of the grain. Look at how light the forend wood is compared to the butt. You can see how dark the finish is at the rear bevel where I have not removed it yet. I'll have to stain the forend darker to match the butt before I put the oil finish on...

Oh my... They should have charged you extra for that piece of wood. Looks like you won the BC stock lotto on that one!

Hopefully the metal parts are not as inconsistent in quality as those stocks and finishes seem to be?

Just the pic. I don't know why the color is off. Maybe my cheap camera...

What is that rear sight you have there???

Excellent. It looks much more appropriate for the style of rifle than the Williams H&R puts on it...
