Which front sight for Marlin 39a?
« on: May 15, 2006, 11:33:31 AM »
I've got the Marbles tang sight on my Marlin and I'd like to put a Lyman globe sight on the front, but I'm not sure which model to use since it doesn't appear to have a dovetail groove.  Do I have to use the Lyman 93 with what looks like a clamp on mount?

Any help would be appreciated...thanks.

On my Marlion 39s, I have a ramp that screws into the barrel with two screws. The ramp has the 3/8" dovetail in it that I use Lyman 17A sights in for cowboy silhouette.

I mill a dove tail in mine and use a Lyman globe. This looks better, and the back sight will still have enough elevation adjustment.

WHat is a 'globe' site? The rules say on page 8 (current date ver March 2005) 3.1.3 - 1. "Front sights must be post or bead, may be hooded or if interchangable may use post insert only."

I went to Midway and looked at one...seems like it can accept a post insert...

Question here...I have shot the post style front sight and find it incomparable to the bead... being new at this, can you explain?

Thanks,

Chicken

Not sure what ur asking? I use the fine bead insert. We shoot on white targets. No problem with contrast. On Black targets, a different sight reference may be better, and a post may be handier. Or, for those with a little weaker eyes, maybe a post may be better. Not, sure if this helped.

Can you do that?

"or if interchangable may use post insert only."

The rules seem to say that is they are interchangable, you can only use a post style insert, that's what I asking...

Thanks,

Post or bead

I personally use a fine post made by Lee Shaver in my Lyman 17a.  I think the flat top gives me a more distinct reference point than a round bead.  However, I know that others like the bead better.  According to the rule book, this should rule out using the bead inserts, but I have not personally seen this come up.  Maybe at a big match (State, Regional or Nats), if you're in the money, someone might (read surely) make this an issue.

However this clearly rules out using a front aperture or the silhouette shaped apertures, as made by Shavers.

First I guess I didn't look closely enought to notice that screw on base had a dovetail in it.

Second, I would wonder if that wouldn't put the front sight too high for the tang sight.  Which height 17a are you using?  (.404", .494", .584")

Beads and posts are legal. A bead in this context is a post. The spirit of the rule is no aperture type insert where you circle the target. Either in the shape of a "donut", or specific "Target animal" eg. chicken insert for a chicken. Let's not overthink this rule.

Right.. a "bead" here is actually a post with bead on top of it, as opposed to just a post. I use the post with fine bead insert from Lee Shaver. Works just like the dot in my scoped rifles.

With all due respect you are wrong about that. The entire rule reads this way...

Page 8 from the March 2005 Rules read

" *3.1.3 Cowboy Lever Action Silhouette Rifle

1. Rear sights may be open sights, receiver or tang sights manfactured for the rifle they are mounted on. Front sights must be a post or bead, may be hooded or if interchangable may use the post inserts only"

A bead is NOT a post, if it was in the sprit of this rule, they would have seen no reason to say "must be a post OR bead".

Right, wrong or otherwise, the current rules do not allow you to use a bead if the front sights are interchangable.

Thanks,

Chicken

Any chance of checking with Greg at the NRA on this one, Chicken? I went to the post and bead insert for my sight after seeing a claim that someone had asked Greg directly about this issue and he said that the post and bead inserts were OK. I don't want to be using anything illegal, even if I just shoot cowboy in the little local matches.

I'm going with my interpretation, that the beads and posts are basically the same. If someone wants to protest it, so be it.

Marlin 39A Ft/Rr sight combo
« Reply #14 on: June 05, 2006, 12:18:40 AM »
I've already replaced the rear sight on my 1975 vintage Marlin 39A with a Lyman 66MC and want to use a Lyman Globe on the front. I measured the original front sight and it is .300 from the base of the 'v' to the c/l of the bead. The 17A only comes in (.404", .494", .584") heght dimensions. It seems that with the generous elevation adjustment on the 66MC that the .404 shouldn't be a problem. Everyone seems to just say use the 17A but no height indications is suggested. Anyone have any experience with this. Need help please.

I've used the shortest 17A (think it's the AHB, surely the .404" one) on all three of the 39s that I've set up for cowboy lever silhouette shooting and they've worked fine. Anything higher than that might give a little trouble getting a decent cheek weld on the stock, so I'd stick to that one unless you know specifically that you need a higher one.

Jason, (and AMB for that matter)

I did speak with Greg Conner while I was at the Southern Nationals on another matter via phone. He confirmed that the Bead insert was fine by him. Basically as said here, no animal apptures or etc. Being the hard headed ind that I am, I asked about the wording...LOL. Whell why does it say post or bead and then say Post only. None the less he conirmed as AMB said here, a post with a bead on top is the same as a post...LOL

Thanks and sorry for my confussion!
