Opening morning for squirrels and my .32

Hi all,
    Well, today was opening day for bushytails here in Missouri....and some died!! I spent yesterday evening fine tuning my CVA .32 "squirrel" and this morning away we went! I had a blast! I only took three out of the woods this morning.....but only shot three times. I saw multiple squirrels in trees but could not reload fast enough to get a second shot, not to mention waiting for the smoke to clear......what a way to spend the morning! I finally settled on best load for this gun. Mine shoots best at 15 Gr. 3F Goex / .310 ball / .015 patch (thanks again Slayer). Cloverleafs the balls at 30 yds. dead nuts center of silver dollar size target, could not be more pleased. Seems like the older I get, it's the simplier things in life that give me the most pleasure.

Amen...and congratulations!

Sure wish we had an early season here in NC but we don't...and worse...squirrels don't open until a week after deer season opens and deer hunting with Flintlocks is always my first priority...

spitpatch, the second I saw the title of your post I knew you were from Missouri, even before I looked at your location.  Congratulations on a good morning and finding a good load for your rifle!!!

I was out at daylight with my .36 cal, flint, Southern mountain and I had kind of a tough morning.  I saw several, (geeezz....there must be 5000 on my place), but they weren't real active.  I only had two good shots and got one of those.   The other, I swear he raised his head just as I pulled the trigger and the shot went where his head WAS!  Oh well...that's why it's called hunting and not shooting.

I redeemed myself yesterday evening with two head shots so I ended up with a total of 3 for the day.  Two young grays and my fist fox squirrel off my place.  Fox squirrels are kinda scarce on my place as it isn't their desired habitat.  Gray's are thick as hair on a dogs back.

I'm like you in that the simplicity of squirrel hunting has pretty much become my favorite.  Yesterday morning was my 42nd opening day and the beginning of my 48th squirrel season and I still love it.  That many seasons doesn't seem possible!!!!!!!

Good luck with your future squirrel hunts.  Ain't no finer eatin' to be found!

That sure sounds like a great day in the squirrel woods. Season here in Tennessee doesn't open up until the last Saturday in August. I can't wait to get after those gray squirrels with my T/C Senevca 36 caplock. 8)

Sharps......there pretty thick here also.......I've never seen the likes! Last year was a bumper crop year for the nut trees, plenty to eat. Not many reds around here either, but more grays than ticks. Thats good cause I can't get as many with my BP as I can with my .22......was an absolutly glorious morning yesterday around daybreak, wind was still and nothing better than listening to the woods starting to wake up and critters starting to stir...then being able to hunt them critters. God is good. This nation may have a lot of problems but it's still the best nation on the planet......Also.....Everyone please take a little time out to remember our veterans (living and dead) and the sacrifices the made to secure us the freedom we enjoy. These sacrifices cannot be repaid......but they can be remembered....and honored.  To all the veterans on this board....THANK YOU... for securing me the freedom to own a gun and the freedom to use it

Sounds like you had a blast Spitpatch. I have to wait until the middle of August to get after those squirrels. I cast about 150 .310 balls last month and will get my squirrel rifle out before to long and do some plinking. Have a good one........ :grin:  Later, ELMO

Elmo, whats the deal with your season.....I've seen other posts about late seasons.....TNrifleman has an Agust season in Tenn. also. Roundball in NC opens a week after deer season??? Our season runs from May to December 31.....Gotta' love that!     Rick
