1st time shooting a G2 in .223 - range report
« on: May 27, 2006, 09:55:26 PM »
Range report:
First time using a .223 TC 23 inch barrel.
I sighted in at 100 yards with Winchester 45 grain JHP rounds.
Went out to 200 yards and shot a 3 shot group.
The 3 shot group was a half inch center to center.
Were talking factory ammo here.
Pulled the barrel off the gun and then reassembled it.
The handguard never left the barrel.
The next shot was at the same point of impact as before.
It was a good day.

Sounds like you got a shooter there. I haven't seen a G2 other than ads and on T/C's website. I have one question how did you remove the barrel without taking off the forend or handguard. Is the hinge pin exposed on a G2? I'd love to be able to do that with my Contender and Encore.

I trimmed the backend of the handguard. The flaps that cover the hingepin
were removed. The handguard was refinished with dye, oil stain, and later 7 coats of tungoil. The stock was also refinished to match. It looks
great.  These modifications are in addition to sanding out the handguard
barrel channel for free floating and epoxy bedding.  I was using cheap winchester whitebox 45 grain JHP .223 ammo. A good factory match load or handload might really shoot tight.  The winchester whitebox loads will work fine for varmints.

I sort of figured thats what you did. Do you have any trouble with the hinge pin shifting? It does sound like a great idea the torque on the forend screws never changes and the POI should stay consistant. You got me thinking now. Maybe boring holes in the flaps to access the pin.

I get the same poi even with removing the forestock.  I don't have a 223, but my 204 Ruger does about the same.  And I can hunt with mine and not worry about loosing the pin.

The pin wont drift out easily.  I did make sure it was flush before each shot.    A custom aluminum handguard could probably enhance accuracy a bit also.

What kind of accuracy are you getting with the .204 setup you have?
Is it a factory or custom barrel?

factory.  If I do my part, watch the wind etc. 5 shots in an inch at 100 yards, some groups less.

My G2 is a .204 also, and with my handloads i have shot a group of .202" and am very happy with the factory barrel.

i have yet to shoot a load with 32 grain bullets over an inch. the 40's were all over the target.

could not be happier with my G2.
