I thought I would go and try out the stripper clips in a mdl 44 to give a better explaination than "they don't work".
I loaded the clip
My first attemp I couldn't get the bullets to slide into the gun.
I reloaded the clip.
My second attempt the bullets actually slid into the gun (with difficulty), however it also locked up because the rims were not staggered correctly. The rim of the top cartridge was behind the one below it. I had to release the cartridges from the bottom.
I then inserted the cartridges into the clip with the rims correctly overlapping. You would only be able to insert the clip from the end where they were properly overlapping though. I carefully installed the clip while holding the cartridges in proper alignment and while pulling up a bit and back on the clip and reaching around to put my thumb as close to the rims as possible and sticking out my tongue and wrinkling up my face I managed to slide the cartridges in with more than a bit of effort. It took much longer to do than my description. Viola! It worked! All the cartridges feed.
However, I was never able to repeat the procedure again. Typically if I can get the cartridges out of the clip and into the gun the rims jam up and the entire contents have to be dumped from the bottom. Never had any of these problems with Enfield stripper clips and 303 rounds, not sure why the Russian guns are so cantankerous about it.
So there is my better explanation than "they don't work"
I have never tried honest by God Russian clips, but it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't work either.
