Scope ran out of travel - tell me about shimming
« on: May 31, 2006, 01:47:53 PM »
I have a Vari X III 8.5-25 with two piece Leupold rings and bases.
My math told me I need 13 moa @ 500 meters.  13 put me on paper but I needed a little more.  I ended up going up to 15 with almost no poi change.  I then discovered it mechanically tops out at 16 moa, but the cross hairs stopped moving long before that.

I can get brass shims in any thickness.  How thick do I need?  I think I should go down about 5-7 moa, sound right?
Any other advice on shimming?

The other options is to use the offset rings from Burris. I have used then with good success.  They are designed not to bind your scope.

Thanks,
I was wondering about scope bind.  I already lapped the rings.  Maybe I can re-lap them but it might have to take a lot of material off.

I put a 20 thousand brass shim stock under the rear base center up the scope and bases if you have the adjustable bases and take the scope off and lapp the rings.
