Which Red Dot??
« on: June 26, 2006, 11:50:00 AM »
Hi all!
Just bought a new Ruger MKIII Hunter. So far its been great. Been out once with it and burned through 250 rounds plinking. Other than the front sight coming loose, no FTF's, FTE's, or other problems.

I'm thinking about a red dot sight for it.

Which red dot sight do you prefer?

Dot size?

Tube size, 1" or 30mm?

Specific brand that is most durable?

Pictures appreciated.

Thanks.

Which Red Dot??

GLC:

Got a 1" UltraDot on my Ruger Comp and a 1" ADCO Miage Ranger on my Pardini.

I'm pleased with both...although the UltraDot is more versatile (it came with a filter for outdoor use), the ADCO is compact/lighter.  Never really gave the 30MM's much thought, the 1" tubes seem to work fine for me...and I'm partial to the 3-4 MOA dots.  BTW, neither site has given me any problems.

Hope this helps.  ...Chris   :D

I have a couple red dots for my 22/45, one is the BSA RD30 and the other a 1" by NC Star.  Both are inexpensive and fine for plinking, plate matches and small game hunting.  A while back a friend loaned me his 1" AimPoint, its hands down a better quality sight than the BSA or NC Star but when it came to accuracy I saw no difference.

I wound up putting a 2.5x Bushnell optical scope on my 22/45 because I use it more for precision paper shooting and small game hunting than anything else.

I have an inexpensive Tasco on my MKII.  I m thinking about a scope for hunting.  I put a more expensive Millet on my SRH that has a much clearer and defined dot.

I had a BSA RD30SB and they quite inexpensive and had it on my slab side for 5-6 years and still works like the day I got it. Only recently have I upgraded to an Ultradot Match 30mm 4 Dot. The difference in the dot appearance and quality is quite significant. But it depends if you want a $40 or a $200 sight and what best suits your needs and budget.

Still you cannot beat the olde BSA for the price/value for a lower end sight. In comparison the ultradot gives adjustment for 2, 4, 6, and 8 moa dot sizes, an excellent feature and also it has 11 brightness settings which most red dots have these days. It comes with rings, polarizing filter, lens covers, extended sunshade and rubber eye piece.  Larry's Guns has these online for as cheap as you will get anywhere with free shipping and absolutely excellent customer service. Llink is http://www.larrysguns.com .

30mm gives a wider field of view than 1" (25.4mm) and imho a 4moa dot is about as large as you want to go for most types of target shooting or plinking for that matter. I use the 2 MOA 99% of the time.

EDIT : As for the question if they are durable. I also have an UltraDot on my 44mag using near max loads for hunting and never had a problem with it. It is a basic silver 1" 4 MOA. I did use what I considered to be more solid rings ... http://www.bghi.us/index.php?x=44ss6
