Machias 500 yd shoot
« on: April 07, 2003, 09:26:43 PM »
Hi all, yesterday I shot my new Ballard #4 Perfection rifle (cal. .40-65) at 500 yds for the first time.  I had heard that there was a shoot at the Machias (WA) range on the 1st Sat of the month so I thought I would go and see what it was like.

I thought it would be a BPCR match with steel targets at 200, 300, 385, and 500 yds (mtrs), but as it turns out it was a 45 round match on paper bulls at 500 yds.  Three 15 shot strings.

I have only had this rifle for about 1 month, and am just trying to work up some decent loads for it.  I had the rifle zeroed at 200, and after checking the ballistic tables for this load found that there would be a 248 inch drop from 200 to 500 yds.  I was a little sceptical about puting 50 mins of elev. on for my first shot, but did just that, and low and behold I was in the 8 ring with my first shot!

Most of the other 15 shooters were using the prone position, but I was using the sitting over cross sticks. I didn't do too bad with a 350 score out of a possible 450.  That included 1 complete miss (-10 pts) and one cross fire on the next target (again -10 pts)  I had a 10X on the wrong target!!!!!

It was pouring rain here in western WA and the wind was gusting from 2-10 miles per hour.  In other words it miserable.  But it sure was fun.

I wanted to get in a little practice for Kenny Wasserburgers Wyoming Territorial match next month and this is the only place SI can shoot out to 500 yds around here.  I will really have to do some math to be able to get on his 800, 900, and 1000 yd targets in May!!

If any one else from WA State is going to this match  let me know.

I posted this because it doesn't seem like anyone posts too much about shooting matches here lately.  No one has even posted on the Paper Patch  site for well over a week, and that was me!!  Come on lets get some action here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-D   Omaha Poke

OP,

If my memory serves me correctly, I think I’ve shot there in a match a few years ago. I thought they stopped having the mid-range matches for a while. I think the strange course of fire (prone unsupported is due in part to the Canadian influence (long Range shooters). They were shooting Martinis and Ruger #1s.

The time I shot there it was similar, the 1st match was sitting cross sticks or prone unsupported with a spotter. The second match was the same, but you had to spot for yourself. We were screwed up on the second match because all we had for a tripod was one of those stool/scope stand combination deals. We had to shoot the second match without a spotter    Always check the rules before showing up!

Really was a cool match, they gave away quite of bit of stuff. I came away with a ham, and big slab of bacon.

By any chance did you meet a guy by the name of Jeff Higgins while you were there?

Omaha:
Have you tried the Upper Nisqually Sportsmens Club near Eatonville?  They have a 1000 yd range which should enable you to get sighted in for longer distances.  Their website is WWW.members.tripod.com/unsc.  I am not a member, but I have heard it is a fairly nice range.  See you again on May 3rd if you aren't going to Paul Bunyon for the 600 yd match.

pAUL BUNYAN MATCH???
« Reply #3 on: April 13, 2003, 09:57:41 AM »
I am the treasurer at the Upper Nisqually Sportsmans club and we have regular 1000 yard matches the first Sunday of each month and 550 yard matches the 3rd Sunday. The 1000 yard match is a modern Br match but we allow anyone to shoot what they have except for 50 BMGS after our match. Someone will stay around after the match to assist with targets and spotting etc. We are currently planning on target pits for our 550 yard match in the near future and plan on holding some BPCR matches soon. All we need are a few interested shooters to make it out and shoot.

When is the Paul Bunyan BPC rifle match? I'd like to attend as I have a new 38-55 in the works that can be fired but the stock work isn't completed yet.

I'd like to get the inside scoup on the available matches in the Washington state area as I'd like to start attending. Can you E-mail me some info? :D  :D

The 600 yd match will be held at Paul Bunyon on May 3 at 9 AM.  The course is one 10 round string from a bench, 15 minute time limit, with a 10 minute sight-in period, and two 15 round strings from any position, 20 minutes, unlimited sighters within that period.  Entry fee $ 7.00.  The contact is Mitch at 253-841-1218 (after 9 PM).
Only 2 BPCR matches are scheduled each year at Paul Bunyon.  For more habitual shooters, they can drop by the Seattle Rifle and Pistol range each 1st Sat for the 500 yd any position matches.  Match director is Steve at 425-879-4590.

 Due to an unfortunate scheduling conflict we will have to cancel next Saturday's match at Machias WA. However, the 600yd match at Paul Bunyan at Puyallup WA has been moved to May 10th. The next match at Machias will be June 28th.
