Brand new cannon
« on: June 05, 2006, 02:36:24 PM »
Here is a new cannon made by B. Steinke of Culbertson Ne.it is for a friend of his. It took one year to make and thats just the barrel, the carriage came from some place back east. The cannon is 3/4 scale. The bore is 40mm. This cannon might make it to the Casper shoot, things are not firm yet. the bullet weight is 2.8 lbs. a 3 oz. charge was used. The first 4 shots were to make sight adj. the 4 shots were  for group. three were touching in the bull, one 2in. high and right. Not bad for a new cannon. the range was 100 yds.

Very Nice. Looks like it has a rifled barrel. Sweet. Any chance you can take another picture of the cannon with a can of black powder for scale?

If that's a five gallon pail next to it in the first picture, the powder can will be almost invisible.  (-:

Here are some more pics of the new cannon and some shots of the ammo and the builder.

first pic is showing some 2.5 in. bullets after being swaged to size. they weigh 3.25 lbs.

next shot is showing the difference of the 40mm and the 2.5 in. bullets the 40mm weight is 2.8 lbs. the 2.5 in. is 3.25 lbs.

last shot is of the new cannon and the guy that built it. Bill steinke. the bigger bullets in the above pics. is for his cannon, which he built 40 years ago. he has won a lot of matches with it through years. these bullets are his own design. he makes his own molds and dies . you also can see the rifling of the barrel.

Cool shootin' iron!

Did he do the rifling from scratch, or was it a 40mm barrel?
