Hello everyone on this forum. I am a pretty fresh bowhunter and will go after big game with my 48# Browning Wasp recurve. Anyway, I shot cedar arrows all summer out of this bow with 125 gr 2-blade Bear razor heads and of course 125 gr field points. I am now wanting to find a maker of high quality, no fancy-art type, arrows of hardwood such as Ash so that I can get great penatration from my light poundage bow. Which maker do you people suggest I look to for fully finished hardwood arrows?

Custom King (Tim Cosgrove) has great arrows. Cedar, Maple, Ash etc...

You can do what you want to but I would consider the fallowing options here: You might want go a heavier Broadhead, you do not say what size your draw length or thickness of the shafts you are shooting now. You can also try soaking your shafts to get uniform weight plus weight build up I recall reading about this in the Traditional Bowhunter Magazine here not to long ago I will look it up and give you the issue reference date and information if you would like.
As for the two wood here is a quick summary of the two. You might want to consider these factors as well.
Ash -Summary
Heavy weight
Very Durable
Not very straight
Hard to stain
Hard to straighten

Port Orford Cedar - Summary
Light to moderate in weight
Not very durable
Fairly Straight Grained
Takes a stain well
Fairly easy to straighten

OK I looked up the article it was in the jun/jul 2002 Traditional Archery Magazine it was about weight matching arrows.

Bowhunter, is that the actual name of the mag, "Traditional Archery Magazine" or do you mean "Traditional Bowhunter Magazine"? I don't think I have heard of the "Traditional Archery" one before, but I do get "Trad Bowhunter" though. What's the name of the article? "Penetration for Dummies"? Is there actually a way you could soak cedar shafts in some substance as to be able to add many more gr of weight to them for better penetration? Would you suggest that I just stick with a harder wood than cedar, so that I may get better peneatration on deer and elk? What wood do you suggest for me to try with my light bow? Sorry for all the questions! :?:

*Kustom King does look worthy to me, just wanted hear them suggested from another hunter. I quess I will try them out.

your right I am sorry was in a hurry to get to work yesterday had to work traffic for K-state football game it is the Traditional Bowhunter Mag. I am sorry about that..... yes tha artical desribed soaking them to build and weight matching by Hugh Bac Cracken on pg.105.
better yet I will email a copy of it to you itstead of tryin to explain it.

OOPS, I was looking in an old June/July mag. I don't have that issue right now, as I have quit a few of my bow mags lent out right now. I searched everywhere for that one and my friend must have it. That would very well of you to email what you can. Thanks again,

Well Myronman, I started out with 125 gr heads, but shot them so much that they wore down to 25 grs! And I still can't hit nothing!!!

Actually I probably got donut crumbs under the (1) key and it would not type. Alright I goofed, and i'll try and edit it ok? Thanks for rubbing it in though.

thats pretty good! i like the part about donut crumbs, too! i think you and i have similar interests! :-D love them donuts!
really, though, kustom king is good to deal with. your cedars will do fine; and so will your razorheads. it really helps penetration if you use a two blade design (like the razorhead, which i use) and if the shaft of your arrow is a tad smaller than the base of the broadhead. and of course, keep you arrows VERY sharp. do that and put them where they need to be and you'll be in like flynn. best of luck> :wink:
