My Dad gave me his old 30AS a few years before he passed on, and I put a Williams Foolproof receiver sight on it last fall. This rifle has a dovetail cut into the barrel, and to boot, the barrel band is very close to the dovetail. I tried a few different front sights from Williams and Marbles with no luck. They were not high enough to bring my point of impact down to the point of aim even with the rear sight adjusted as low as it would go.
After tons of searching, the solution was a front sight from XS Sights. It is a very nicely made white line post that is the perfect height. It is not on their website, or in their catalog. I called them and told them what I was looking for and the guy said it was for a Winchester lever action. I explained the situation about the barrel band, etc. and he said no problem. If I recall, it was about $35 or so
Got it in a few days, installed it and went to the range. Works perfectly!
If you like I could fine the package and give you the part number, etc., or post a picture
