My bore is .432 and I cant find a sizer in .433"
« on: June 04, 2006, 07:34:44 PM »
I slugged my barrel (.44 Magnum rifle) and it is .432. I have checked RCBS, Lyman and lee and the largest sizer die I can find is .431". From what I understand I need .001" over so as not to lead my barrel and also get good acuracy. Do I have to have a custom sizer made??????

No!  Lyman makes .433 sizers.  If need be you can purchase .433 diameter bullets from Beartooth Bullets.  HTH.  Mikey.

YOu can also lap out a Lee sizer or have them do it for you.  Just curious, what diameter bullet does your mould throw?

On a suggestion from this site, I honed out one of my Lyman sizers from .512 to a little over .513, and it worked great.  All I used was a wooden dowel and sandpaper on an electric drill.  It's not that hard, doesn't take long, and I enjoy making something work that you previously couldn't use.  Of course, if you can find a factory one, thats even easier!

It casts at .433

The mold casts at .433 however I have seen as low as .431. Some are at .435. Its a lee mold with the small groves. Its casts 6 at a time. As far as the gun, its a Timberwolf in .44 mag. that has hardly been shot.

Have you tried sorting the bullets by size and shooting them without sizing? The Lee TL bullets were designed for that and while .001 is a guideline you may find that more or less will work best in your gun. The few lee moulds I have all dropp bullets that seem to shoot best "as is". Is the as dropped size difference because of varying batches of lead alloy or because some of the mold cavities are of irregular size? You might want to cast a sampling of 1 cavity at a time and measure them to see if this is the case.
Just another worthless opinion!!

Thanks for the great idea. I will check each cavity and only use the one that gives the correct size. As for my lead, it was cast from large batches of Wheel Weights and its possible that its not all consistant.
