the new hornady leverevolution factory loads
« on: May 27, 2006, 11:14:03 AM »
has anybody tried them?  im kind of antsy to see what they cost and how they work.  they are like a balistic tip but instead of hard plastic cone on the tip..its a flexible rubber tip...so it wont mash the primer of the next shell in the tube mags.

looks like they make em in 30/30, .35, .444, 45/70 and .450.

wijim, I've tried it for the 30-30.  Brand new rifle, brand new ammo, first three groups right at 1.5"  Once the rifle is shot more and I'm more familiar with it, I'm sure that will tighten up.  I'm paying $17.99 a box and it seems to be worth every penny.  Good shootin'.

well pretty sure they won't come out in .32 special huh? oh well. my concern would be in cold weather. here in Manitoba by the time deer season rools around it can be pretty cold, often snow on the ground. so just how safe would that rubber type tip be if it was frozen solid? for those of you in warmer climates, plastic becomes hard and brittle in the cold. i've broken those million time hing cartridge boxes in the cold and seen plastic gun clips do the same

Does anybody think that these bullets will be availalble for reloading purposes at some point?
Who are you going to believe, me or your own eyes? :)

i dont profess to know anything about these cartridges in particular, but will say that there are many many compounds of rubber-like plastics that remain very supple in the cold (sub-zero) and are very srtong.  so i guess the proof would be in the pudding.  i for one would be happy to try them out to get improved ballistics at longer ranges.

I have a 35 Rem. and was thinking about trying them. To tell you the truth though I only use this rifle (carbine) in the really think stuff and my shots will be under a 100 so I don't think it's worth it for me. If I'm going to hunt were I might have longer shots then that I'll use my 308 Win. or 280 Rem. I'm fortunate to have a few different rifles to choose from. If someone only had one rifle (lever action) it might be a good idea to try these!

As far as offering the bullets to reloaders. I'm not so sure. Wouldn't you need a special seater plug to keep from deforming the ballistic tip?

I understand it's supposed to squish a bit in the mag tube under recoil. But wouldn't the force of seating a bullet in a case be a whole different ball game?

Just a thought.

I'll keep an eye out for them at Goose Hill and the other big store near here. (my friends call it Sportsman's somethinghouse, I wasn't sure if that was appropriate for a family board) If I find some in 45/70, I'll try a few and report.

Nixter,

The seating plug presses against the ogive of the bullet so that wouldn't be an issue.

Tim, looking at the plug from my RCBS die. I see this, the cup, as it were, on the end of the seating die matches almost to a "T" the nose of a Rem 405 gr JSP. Looking at a Cast Performance WLNGC 405 gr hardcast, the end of the seater plug rests just a hair below the meplat of this bullet. (by meplat I mean the flat striking part of the bullet)

Not ever seeing the Leverolution ammo in person might be leading to my concerns. The depth of the cup on my seating plug isn't something I know how to measure accurately. I suppose I could get specs from RCBS but that seems to be a moot point if Hornady won't let the handloader play with their new toy.

All these comments are from a neophyte shooter and an even more neophyte reloader. Up for discussion/debate.

One of the members at MarlinOwners got hold of 250 of the flex tip bullets from Hornady(don't ask!), so I expect they'll be available sooner or later. Right now, not all of the Leverevolution calibers are available, the .45-70 and .450M ammo was just released, I don't think the .444 is out yet, tho.

Fusion ammo has been out for a year now and the bullets still aren't available to us handloaders, me being a noob handloader myself too, btw!!

You're right, the seating plug for .45-70 may need to be changed to allow for the spitzer shape of the flex tips, although one may be able to just drill the center out so the tip doesn't interfere.

According to a friend of mine Hornady will be making that bullet available to reloaders early 2007. He stays up on that stuff more than I so it's probably true.

That ammunition worked so well in my Model 30 that I sighted her in on it and ordered 5 boxes from Midway ... $14.99 a box. Of course they are on back order. It beat my best handload. Haven't tried it in the old Model 36 24" barrel but got an idea it will do better. It didn't do as well in the 30-30 NEF Handi rifle but I feed it real Spire Points anyway.

Tim

quick,

I've got a bud in FL who has been shooting the .444's for a little bit now and reports excellent results with them.

I'm really hoping they come out with the reloading components in the not-too-distant future. I've got a Win 94 in .44 Mag that I'd like to reload for. Anybody know if the .428 slugs will work in place of the .430 slugs? I don't see the 0.002" difference will change things, but you never know.

GS, that's good to know, Midsouth and Midway still show both the .444, .450M and .45-70 still on the way or backordered!
