Graybeard's new ride
« on: October 09, 2004, 02:13:13 PM »
GB got a new ride today. Retiring the mostly faithful of Bronco I've been riding the past 10+ years. Gonna miss him but it's time to put the old horse out to pasture.

No mud yet on those nice white letter tires?

Not yet. As dry as it's been down this way of late there isn't any mud anyway. Just drove it home on the highway. My 250 yard long driveway was the only non paved surface it touched. I'm sure before season is over down here it will see mud.

Matt was trying to get me to take it mud riding today but he didn't talk me into it. I go nowhere just to see if I can. If I need or really want to be somewhere then I do my best to make it but never just to see if it will. Way too old for such.

Color is actually called "desert sand mica" I believe. Up close in person in good light it looks more gold than gray to me. Lighting can sure change the appearance tho. I could have waited on a gray one to match the beard but decided to take this one that was in stock. I really was ready for a new truck and the real gray ones weren't gonna be in for awhile.

No sooner do I get a new truck than the boys swoop in to get the spoils. Matt drove my Bronco away from the dealership and says it is now his. Oldest son Bob has laid claim to my old Ford F150 4x4.

So fer shore if I hunt it's gonna hafta get muddy and hopefully bloody. I do plan to get a Line-X liner sprayed in soon. Meant to call them today but maybe I'll remember tomorrow.

Nice truck Bill.  I'm waiting for a 2005 Tacoma.  From what I've found out about them so far, they are quite an upgrade.

Hey GB
How's the new ride holdin' up?
Been lookin' for a good, old P/U for a while, and researching newer models.
Ain't been likin' what I've been learnin'.
Ain't found the particular old truck I've been huntin'.
Been lookin' at the Tundra w/v8 for a time.
How's it haulin' a load or pullin' a trailer?
Thanks

Well DoC I'm happy with it to this point. Toyota quality is legendary, a big factor in me chosing it to begin with. Pretty much everyone who owns one says 200,000 miles is easy with little work. I doubt I'll live long enough to put that many miles on it.

The V8 is quite powerful and for sure has all the power I expect to ever need from it. I've not yet got 500 miles on it. I'm not a high mileage driver and barely drive 5000-6000 a year these days. Even before I retired I hardly ever topped 10,000 per year.

The only load I've hauled so far was my new Yamaha Bruin 350 yesterday when I brought it home. At well under 1000 pounds that hardly even qualifies as a load for it.

I don't own a trailer of any type except the work trailers I use here on my blueberry farm to pull behind my four wheelers. So can't comment on that and likely won't be able to for years. I do plan to buy a 5'x8' trailer to haul the new Yamaha as it really is longer than the truck bed almost. With tailgate closed the metal rack on front is well under 2" from back windown and if front tires made contact with bed at cab the metal rack would break the window so hauling it in bed is not a good plan.

I'm only on the second tank of gas in it and it maybe late next week before I need another. So while I'm mighty happy with mine I'm probably not the kinda driver to answer your questions about them.

and here's the rest of the story:
Yesterday I bought a Tundra that just about matches your pics.
Two differences: 2002 and 2wd.
Young family in Little Rock expecting again, "two car seats wouldn't fit" so they bought a Honda mini van.
Only 22,000 miles, but still more money than a '78 F250 I think.
As per the questions, I have a sixteen foot fishing/hunting boat and I always overpack.  My old Dakota V6 is tired and going through the Ozarks and Ouachitas was agrivating.
I started vacation today and leave for deercamp tomorrow.  I try not to be bothersome, but your response leads to another question:
Could you report on your new Yamaha when you get acquainted.
I really enjoy the site and the forums.
Thanks
DoC

Sure. Will be doing that on the ATV forum. Matter of fact I've already posted my initial impressions of it there. I rode it around a bit after I got it home yesterday. Will likely ride a bit more this weekend. Matt's supposed to come over to straighten out his mess in my barn and he always rides the Recon when he's here. I'll likely ride the Bruin some too while he's here.
