Hi, just bought new 445 - need advice on mounting scope!
« on: January 11, 2007, 04:02:16 PM »
Hi All,

I just bought a new production DW 445 Supermag!  I'm in love!  The gun is every bit as nice as my S&W Performance Center 460 and even better due to the barrel system.

Also, THE TRIGGER BLOWS THE S&W AWAY!!!!!!!!   There is a tiny bit of creep that is going away the more I dry fire it (we're talking about a fraction of a MM to start) and it is so light and short compared to the Smith.

I like it so much the Leopold 2.5-8 power scope is getting yanked off and put right on the DW.  My issue is that I'd like the most stabile mount possible, 3 rings if that is doable.  I DO NOT want to barrel mount (I've seen people who've used the vent as a base for the rings) - I do want base.  If I was to barrel mount (as I was forced to do on the Smith) the eye relief gets screwy.  NOTE TO ANYONE CONSIDERING THE SMITH - do NOT by the PC model, it is more expensive, and while looking cool the base milled into the barrel shroud is a PIA due to eye relief and the trigger is NO BETTER then the full production model.  Get the production model, just as nice and the JD Jones T'SOB is made to fit it.  SSK will not fit a T'SOB to the PC gun.

Anyhow, I want to do this right, so money is no object.  I'd like the best mount and rings money can buy for a hard kicking gun like the 445.  *IF* anyone knows of QD rings that can hold up to the recoil I would like to consider them - but only if it is certain that they can handle the recoil of both the 445 and 460.

Thanks for any help.

-Calvin

Look in the picture sticky at the top of the Dan Wesson forum and look for the pictures of my two guns both have the burris mount that is a drill and tap attached to the shroud with three screws.

It is shown on the Burris website it is the stainless one at the top on the left.

For my .44 mag I went with Weigand Mount and rings (I used 3)

For a .445 I would suggest you use the strongest mount available.

Here is a picture of the Weigand mount http://www.jackweigand.com/dan_wesson_scope_mount.html

Congratulations on the purchase.

Hi Doug,

Does the Wigand mount bolt up to the factory drilled holes (on new pistols) - which I believe are Burris patterned?

Thanks,

This from the Weigand website.

Dan Wesson scope mount, attaches directly to the shroud. We are using the factory suggested hole
pattern.

I am using the wiegland mount on my 44 mag. It had to be drilled and tapped to be put onto the shroud. The mounting point (where you drill the holes) are the factory recommended points. My 8" shroud did not have any pre-drilled (by the factory) holes. Luckily my Brother is a gunsmith so it was a "Free" install.
