.44 mag rifling
« on: June 06, 2006, 04:03:43 AM »
I came across a deal at my local shop yesterday that I didn't really need, but couldn't pass up.  I got a .44 mag and .223 ultra heaby barrel combo.  The question that I have is the .44 looks to have extremely deep rifling.  I have never seen a 44 rifle of any type.  Is it common for them to have an excessively deep rifling or is this something odd?

My 44Mag is an older barrel, and the rifleing isn't very deep or sharp. And it's not been fired much.
Strange question for you, how many lands do you have in the bore?
Mine is 12. Just curious if thats what the new production 44Mag barrels have.

The real old one's (Mod 155 Shikari era) had deep rifling. Check and see if the lug is brazed on. If it is, it's real old.

Yeap I'm pretty sure it is. Though it did just come back from my Smith friend scgunsmith.
I'll have to see if he did that or if it was originally brazed. How is this procedure done anyway?

The barrel with the 12 shallow  grooves  is a Micro groove barrel this type of rifling was first used by Marlin and is a type of a button rifling..

The barrel with the deep grooves is cut rifling or brochred rifling most older militay rifles had broched rifling with two or four grooves. A fast process.

The new barrel by H&R have button rifling also very shallow with either 4 or six grooves

..Well that sums it up pretty good. I guess mine is one of the early Micro Groove barrels then. It has 12 groves. It doesn't even say Handi rifle on the side or SB2, just 44 Reminton Mag.
It's nice to clear that up.
Thanks Fred  :toast:
