I have a coworker with a Winchester model 71(?) in .348 winchester. Says it is in good to very good condition (some finish wear is all). He's thinking about selling.

Does anyone know how much one of these is worth?

azmike, I would advise you to do some comparison shopping on internet sites like GunsAmerica and GunBroker. Nor being able to see your friend's gun, it is nigh to impossible to grade it. IMO, an average short tang 71 in decent shape should be worth around 800 dollars. A deluxe gun, or a "carbine" version would be appr. 50% more. Early 71s also command a premium. In other words, there are too many variables to consider with Winchester rifles, regardless of model designation. :-)

picked one up about 2 years ago in ex shape for 300 bucks but thats a rare deal. 700-1000 is about right

Thanks for the responses. I will go to gunbroker and check them out there.

He tells me it is a long tang model, although the significance of that escapes me, as I am not a winchester guy.

Azmike the go from a low of 10% at $475 to a high of $1200 for a 100% gun Mfg. from 1935-57 total production of 47254 come with either a 20 or 24 in. barrel Hope this helps, all info from the blue book of values

mike they were made in both long and short tang models, book doesnt show any difference in values on the tangs though, maybe the long tangs were easier to attach a tang sight JIM

Thank you for the information. I will pass it along. He says that he got the long tang with the intent of attaching a tang mounted aperture sight.
