Salt Lake Tribune, 4-24-03:

A man was airlifted to University Hospital in serious condition after an accident at a Kearns indoor shooting range, authorities said Wednesday. The man, an instructor, was teaching a woman how to shoot at Totally Awesome Guns and Range, 4075 W. 4715 South, about 7 p.m. Tuesday, when a hot piece of brass discharged from a gun and went down her blouse, said Salt Lake County sheriff's Sgt. Shane Hudson. She flinched involuntarily and accidentally shot the instructor in the thigh, he said. Authorities did not identify those involved.

Ouch.  Sorry to hear something like this, but I have a couple of questions.

1.  Where was he standing in relation to her and the target?
2.  OK, I really only have the one.  Seems to me she would not have been able to shoot him if he had been standing behind her.

Don't laugh it could happen any time. I still have a scar on my neck from a hot 30-06 case fired from a Browning .30 cal Air cooled M.G. which happened 50 years ago.  If you go to some public ranges there is a lot of risk involved.Horsefeathers.

Once while qualifying on the M-16 rifle I had a spent case bounce up into my shirt sleeve and stick to my arm. I placed the safety on, placed the rifle on the wood block provided, and backed from the shooting line. I almost tore the button off of my fatigue shirt cuff to get the brass off of my arm. An instructor asked " what's the problem troop?" I replied "hot brass sir" and he replied "carry on!" That was over 30 years ago. No, it's not funny when you're the one burning.            Dave

I posted a topic on the humor forum about just this. Look on the second page at " Interesting Day At The Range". I can see exactlly how that could happen.  KN

I imagine he was retrieving the hot empty when he was shot or

was inspecting the hot empty which would attest for him standing next to the shooter.

wierd stuff does happen

I've been hit by hot brass, don't get me wrong, I know it isn't any fun.  I've been hit by hot .223s, .45s, .357 Sigs, and 9mms.  So, yeah, I understand that she freaked out.

I hope this incident doesn't discourage her from shooting or him from teaching shooting.  Let's all hope for a full recovery.
