Ultra Hunter Weak ejector spring
« on: June 13, 2006, 12:56:42 PM »
Hi everyone,

I have bought a H&R Ultra Hunter in .270cal. Nice little short rifle.

The only problem is that (same as many) some case get stuck and don't eject, I have to insert the cleaning rod by the muzzle and lightly tap to get it out. It is not too bad when at the range but in hunting situation, it is really anoying and shouldn't happen with a brand new rifle..

It seems that the ejector spring is week because I can push it in completely with my thumb with not that much pressure. I tried to push the ejector of another one shot rifle an H&R shotgun and on a Cooey one shot shotgun and I couldn't push it completely with my thumb, it was too stif.

Do you guys know how to fix that problem? Can I just change the spring for a stronger one? I 've tried polishing the chamber with no luck, some case still get stuck.

Any imput is appreciated

Thanks

PaulT

Back a year or so ago a man in Washington I think that extra
springs for NEF & H&R's That gave Ejecter power. Mine will
eject 10 to 12 FEET now. Do a seach on this board, Maybe
you can find him. I will look and see if I still have his eee-mail addy.
IIRR it cost $ 8.00 shipped. Marv.

To increase ejector spring tension, you can add a smaller spring inside the existing spring, or put a BB ahead of the spring during reassembly of the ejector. I make a guide and shim with a small machine screw that fits in the spring to add tension on the spring. This is covered in the FAQ and Help sticky by Fred M under Accurizing. Ejector R&R is also covered in the FAQ under conversion to extractor.

Keeping the chamber and brass clean and dry is required or fouling and unburned powder can add to stuck brass issues.
