Yesterday I purchased a used Remington mountain rifle in 7mm mauser.  It came with a leopold 3X9 scope.  I have never had any experiece with this calibre.  It was a spur of the moment purchase because the rifle felt good in my hands.  I usually use hunt with a 308 or 30-06 and I also am working on my 6.5 Swede.  Probably didn't need the rifle but you know what it's like, besides it was owned by a friend who recently passed away.
 
I guess it'll be another deer rifle because I assume it's a little light for moose.  If anyone has experience with this calibre I'd appreciate their opinions on performance and loads.  Thanks.

I killed my first deer with the 7mm Mauser many years ago.....back then, about all you could get from the factory was 175 grain round nose loaded to around 2400 fps if I remember correctly.......now there are several bullets that would work well for deer......139 grain is probably the favorite......

The 7mm Mauser has been widely over-looked in favor of the 7mm/08 which is about balistically the same.......the .257 Roberts is based on the 7X57 case.....

It's not over powered for moose, but I wouldn't hesitate to use it on anything in the lower 48 with the possible exception of grizz.......

It's a great old round......and was what Teddy Roosevelt faced during the spanish-american war......

I'd love to have the exact same rifle......what ya want for it?

Nice rifle & nice round. Yes, you had your bases covered on the lower end with the Swede & on the upper end with the '06, but if I looked at it that way I would have to sell a bunch of guns, I hope my Wife does not see this.

Hey, maybe you should sell it to victorcharlie afterall!  :)

If I remember correctly, TJ Bell killed a bunch of elephants with the 7x57 using solids in Africa way back  when........

Yes he did, & poachers in this area have killed tons of Deer with 22 mags,
I guess it shows on both counts what can be done with brain shots with just enough penetration to get there but little else, I am afraid.

  I've got several 7x57s, the round is an oldie and a goodie!

  it compares very favorably with the classic deer rounds, the .270 win, the 280 rem, the .30/06, and the 7mm08/.308 class cartridges.
 
 I handload a speer 130gr spitzer for mule deer in a winchester mod 70 featherwieght, it has always been a good preformer for me.

   Try it you'll like it.

If you are a student of history, read up on the battles of Spion Kop, and Majuba Hill in the Boar war of 1899-2001. The Boars made a lot of "good Brits" in that war with the 7mm.

I think that the 7x57 and 7-08 are about perfect for most deer hunting. The 7x57 is my favorite. I have it in a Mauser. My favorite load is a 150PT at 2700-2800fps. It is flat enough to aim 'at hair' and powerful enough to take any deer at 300yds. A friend broke both shoulders of a bull elk using a similar load this fall. It was 185yds. I can't imagine hunting moose, but I have no doubt that a 175PT at around 2400fps would do it at 150yds or so. Finn Argaad and jack O'Connor's wife used it (160gn at 265o) on all the African plains game. I believe that Jack said that she had more one shot kills with it than he did with a 7 mag.. capt david  :-)  :-)  :-)

Thanks for the replies.  They make me feel better with the purchase.  I can't wait to take the rifle out to the range.  I figure this is going to be a great carry gun.  Unfortunately it'll be a real pain deciding whether to take the mountain rifle or my old 308 mohawk out on long haul days.  Don't you hate having to choose.  I guess I'll have to alternate.

Man O Man you got a nice rifle!!! I have a 700 Classic in 7x57, it will do anything that the 3006,308,270 clan can do. :wink:
and IF a moose shows up in my neck of the woods(FLORIDA) I will be using my 7x57 with Norma 154gr ammo :)

All I'll say is YOU LUCKY DOG!! :shock:
The 7x57 is the cartridge that inspired the 30-06 and is a giant killer.
It will knock over pretty much anything a 30-06 will with the right bullet and less recoil.

Mind you the only way you'd get a rifle like that of my is by prying it from my cold dead hands! :evil:  :lol:

The 7x57 is my favorite deer rifle. I have used a wide spread of bullet weights on deer and feral hogs with nothing but success. I havent ever had to shoot anything twice with it yet but it could be that I shoot the rifle so well second shot aren't necessary. For powders I like AA4350 and H414. I usually push 160 grain bullets close to 2700 fps and the 150's around 2750fps. Iam still trying to find a bad bullet.

Rickt300 makes a good point.  The 7x57 operates in the proper window for using standard bullets effectively.

There is a good article from "Arms and Ammunition Annual" from 1952 by Jack O'Connor dedicated to the 7mm Mauser.  Even then, he wondered how long the cartridge would last...looks like it will keep on going.  The article is still pertinent 50+ years later.  I don't have it scanned, but may in the future.  

I know Ruger quit chambering their M77MkII in 2004.

I've been looking for a Remington Mountain rifle in 7mm Mauser.  When I can I plan on getting one myself.

I am also a big fan of the 7x57. It is my favorite whitetail deer cartridge. You have a classy hunting rig there, cherish it! 8)

I believe Jack O'Connor described the 7x57 as a "vicious killer". :shock:
Whether this came from the aforementioned article or not it is certainly a strong description of a mild cartridge. :wink:
This from the man who practically idolised the 7mm Rem Mag and the 270 Win.

My hunting pard loves the 7x57. He had an extra tang-safety Ruger bolter in that caliber. It had been blooded on two deer and a moose, to very good effect. He wanted a handgun I had.  We swapped. (He still has a 7mm RSI, and a couple of Mausers, so don't feel sorry for him!)
It's my favorite rifle for still-hunting Maine woods roads, mounted with a bread-and-butter Weaver 4x 'scope. It's just enough gun.
Didn't know Ruger had discontinued that calibration, but glad I've got mine.
