Wolfe Ammo ?
« on: November 25, 2003, 01:47:29 PM »
Has anyone here fired Wolfe Ammo I was told not to use it by the Armilite dealer cause it gums up everything.  I have also been told that it really makes no difference if you clean your weapon regulary when firing.  Does anyone have any expiriance with this ammo.  Open for suggestions.

I have fired 2,400 rounds of WOLF ammo in my Romanian AK-47 with out any problems. It IS dirty, but the usual clean up and everything is ready to go the next time. The only ftf's I've had is with the soft points...guess my AK only likes FMJ!  8)

All:

Wolfe Russian-made ammo uses steel cases.

The AK-47/AKM rifle is designed to be reliable with steel-cased ammunition.  Look at the extractor and notice it's massive proportions.

The AR-15/M16 design on the other hand, is designed for use with brass cartridge cased ammo.  Although a steel case alternate MIL-SPEC exists, all 5.56x45 US military and commercial production uses brass cases.  The Wolfe ammo is notoriously dirty burning, and firing residue will quickly foul up the gas tube on that mechanism.  The US Military has the same problem in using blank ammo for training purposes.

Some users on other boards recommend NOT using Wolfe steel cawed 5.56mm in the AR-15 rifles, not only because it is dirty, but the ammo is hard on extractors.  I've fired several thousands of rounds in AK rifles, but have avoided using them in my AR-15 for those reasons.

I've put about 200 rounds of it through my Mini-14 and have only had magazine related problems (had same problems with brass cased ammo of known quality, only with certain mags, though).  Not a difinitive number, but I'm looking at picking up a case or half case at a show in the near future to get a real feel for it.

It is dirty and it does stink, but it's no dirtier or stinkier than Winchester White Box that comes in the 40 round value packs, IMO.

I should note, too, that the ammo I have fired has all been 2003 production and has had the red sealant removed.  Wolf reported that the red sealant was causing a problem with .223 chambered rifles and a few 5.56 chambered rifles and ceased using it.
