got my first bear this afternoon..

was walking an old logging road and spied a small blackie 60 yards ahead rooting alongf the edge of a cut line. i shouldered the .303, and took aim just as he spotted me and started to bolt. i hit him with a running headshot, more luck then anything, he went down instantly. walked up to him and realized he was a lot smaller then he appeared. both my partner and i thought he was at least twice the size he was when we first saw him. he was probably last year's cub, and when dressed out only comes in around 40 pounds. if i had fully realized the actual size i wouldn't have taken the shot, don't like the idea of shooting the little ones, but there was no changing that. at least it will be nice and tender, not tough and stringy

Don't feel bad about the bear.  As you said, had you suspected it was a young one you wouldn't have shot.  There are those who would, regardless. Fortunately it was a good shot.

On the other hand, exellent shooting and congratulations.

We shot one once it looked bigger too but the scale didn't lie at 130lbs dressed but females are small.  I hated shooting a breeder we can't tell, at least i can't from a distance. Its the exceitment and the adrenalin rush that takes over.  Its something we always practice for at the range too.  I notice at that moment when we are ready to take the shot that no fear is there and its like were there to do a job and its done. Ever notice that? The gun is held rock solid and were serious and ready.

Congrats on putting a notch in that old 303 you need to make a chart for surplus kills for each gun?

If i get my moose tags this year the 8mm hakim just may get the braggin rights I hope. Moose and Venison sausage yummy the best eatin i ever had.

Did the same thing with a Doe several years ago.
Saw it through my scope and never took my scope off of it
before I fired. I bout could have tied it to the end of my rifle barrel
and carried it out over my shoulder. An embarrassing moment to say the least but it sure was tasty.

should have a picture in the next day or two, my buddy is still out watching his bait and has the camera.i'm quite proud and impressed that i skinned the whole thing with no help and no idea what i was doing, it's a bit mangled here and there but not a lot of meat loss, have to find a butcher now

We say 130lbs and 150lbs isn't big until we have to drag it out of the woods.  We took a 220lb 10pt buck out of the woods one night in over a foot of snow yes it was night before we got it out.  The four of us aren't light weights either and we had a hard time doing it.  The dam carcas takes every bit of the lay of the land on the way out i'm sure you guys know what i mean. The bear we had to go up hill.

I'm all for kicking him in the @SS and make him chase me to the car and then shoot him.  I'm going moose hunting and i have no clue how to get it out(hacksaw) cut it up right there?  Thats not so safe in the middle of the hottest bear country.  If your alone it can be very dangerous too i'm not giving up my chance for moose and venison sausage again.  It could sound like a war zone very quickly.  The kill shot does ring a dinnerbell for all the predators right away in the wilds.
