Mini-14 factory folders and how accurate are these rifles?

How tough is it to find a factory folding stock with or without the rifle?  What's a fair price for one?  Does the stock work well?

I'm looking for a good trunk gun for around the ranch and was thinking of looking into one of these.  Gotta be able to shoot at least close to MOA, am I dreaming?

I had a friend who used to have one.  4-5 inches at 100 yds was typical.  I beleve his was either 7.62x39 or 223.  This is typical of what others have reported.  Buy an SKS just as accurate and 1/3 - 1/2 the cost

MOA, yeah hate to say it, but your dreaming w/o accurizing. Try black hills ammo, my 14 loves it. Maybe 2" at 100 yds.

I bought one of the mini 14 ranch rifles and was excited at the prospect of loading heavy bullets in a fast twist .223.  I used sierra matchkings, H-322 and never beat 2 inches.  Factory loads were atrocious.  I got tired of chasing brass and owning a rifle that would not shoot, so traded it off.  I have had people tell me that the mini 14's in 7.62x39 shoot much better, but haven't tried one myself.

No one news group can be all things to all people, so I recommend a long read in the Mini-14 accurizing section of perfectunion.

Lots of great info; how to's, what has & hasn't worked, parts sources, etc.

I've gone from 4-1/2" groups to a little over 2" at 100 yrds by just changing to a reduced gas port, hand-lapping the gas block, and re-torqueing.

Keep seeing people wanting a MOA Mini-14, they're just not esigned or marketed as such.  They're a leightweight, compact ranch/woods auto-loader.  Sure with the right load, they'll likely shoot fairly decent but if you want a match grade gun, buy one intended for such accuracy.  For a hunting gun, you only need "minute of game".

Generally, I agree.  But if a few small inexpensive changes can improve accuracy without reducing reliability, I'm inclined to make the changes.

I owned 3 mini-14's over the years.  None of them shot better then 2.5" at 100yds.  2 shot 4" plus.  Go to Rock River, please.......  God I love this gun, I just can't use it for my needs.

I hate to say it, but a good trunk gun would be the Stevens 200 in 223.  Not nearly as much fun pulling the trigger, but they are accurate - and cheap.

I have one with the factory folding stock, lots of ammo and 40 round mags. Bought it from a guy who needed money ($350.00).  It was  a steal, so I bought it. Functions great, looks cool, great fun to shoot, but whippy barrell and long trigger pull do not help in the accuracy department.  It does attract a lot of attention at the range, though.  I like it!

I love this gun but will only land one in my dreams. As far as accuracy goes...notice how nobody get shot in the A-Team  :D ?

:cb2: I must have really lucked out with my Mini-Thirty. Bought it used, but it looked brand new (SS/synthetic stock). I've not had it to a range, because our range was closed by our broke county government, so I don't know how large the 100 yard groups are. However, I read all the horror stories about how inaccurate the Mini-14s and Mini-30s were, and was surprised at how well it shoots. I didn't get it to be a target rifle, however. I just wanted a fun gun that would shoot MOC — minute of coyote.

True, I could have gotten an SKS a lot cheaper, but I like to buy AMERICAN.  :grin:

Thereis nosuch thing as amini 14 in 7.62x39, is there? I thought that was the mini 30. A lot of people on here seem to think they are the same gun, I think. My mini 14 sucks at the range, but my 30 I'd take to any gunfight. Can't miss with it right out of the box. Have never sighted it in because I obliterate everything I have ever shot at with it. For real. Now, about the 14, .223, does anyone have any suggestion as to a bullet weight, style, brand that will shoot halfway decent in that gun? Tried Black hills,not too impressed.I actually shot 3 deer with this gun using the Remington 54(?) grain Accu tips. One ten pointer weighed 186 and dropped in his tracks without even flinching from one shot to the neck.  I don't like wasting bullets at a range. I'll shoot enough to put me where I know about where the gun will hit and that is good enough. No, I don't wound crap either! That has been my best load so far, believe it or not. Can anyone help me find something better?

The only problem with the Mini-30 is the lack of decent hi-cap mags---maybe that situation has changed since I had mine.

Original factory folders are scarce as hounds teeth---the stocks alone are usually going for $400---they are heavy and clunky---that said---I sooooo want one.
