Recommendations: Good .22 LR Rifle?
« on: June 12, 2006, 09:08:04 AM »
I"m in the market for a good .22 LR Rifle.   I've had bad luck in the last few years, unfortunately.

I had a Marlin 39 that had feed problems.

I had a Kimber bolt action that would not extract & eject.

I had a Ruger 10/22 that started misfiring (click instead of boom) after about two boxes.  It worked OK again after a thorough cleaning.

I  kind of like the looks of the Rem. 597 semi-auto.  Does anyone have any experience with it?

How is the Marlin 60?

Can anybody recommend a good bolt action .22 LR?

All the CZ452 series bolt action rifles are reliable & very accurate.

I just got the new 10/22 Ruger Carbine, 1/2" groups at 50 yards. Have an older 10/22 (1966) that never hass given me any trouble. A Remington Nylon 66 is another great 22 if you can find one!

I've had good luck with the Marlin Mod 25 line of bolt actions.  Early models were also marketed as the Glenfield Mod 20 and if you can find one, the single shot Mod 15 made for just a couple years in the early 80's.  You should be able to locate decent used Mod 20/25's in the $75 - $100 range.

On the higher end, you could look for a Marlin 780 or 880 series.  Some of these had walnut stocks with nice checkering.   You can pay upward of $150 for a good example.  If you prefer a new rifle check the current 900 series.

The Mod 60 has reputation for being a very good and reliable semi-auto. A Mod 60 has been in my family since the 1970's. They need to be kept clean, lightly lubed and not dry fired.  They started life in 1959 as the Mod 99.  There have been many variations manufactured through the years.

I'll second the comment regarding the Remington Nylon 66.  I've had a Mohawk Mod 10 (brown color, clip version) since the early 1970's and I've never had a problem with it.  This is my wifes favorite rifle to shoot.

I also enjoy my NEF Sportster .22 single shot.  Not much can go wrong with a single shot and it shoots very well.

I had a 597 and it jammed right out of the box.  They are almost all junk.  You will read more negative than positive about the 597.  It is not the nylon 66 by any means.  Remington tried to fix the jamming problems with new clips but it has not worked.  My 597 was bought back by my local gun shop.  He no longer carries the 597 and he is the oldest Remington repair center in the Southeast.  Please stay away from the 597.  I've never seen a bad Marlin 60.  They all shoot good from the ones I've seen.  I've never seen a good 597 though.

For a dependable action....either bolt or SS as in NEF..
For accuracy at a base price ...Marlin, Savage and often NEF..

A little more money will get you a CZ..many figure they are worth the difference..

If ya LIKE lever guns check out the Henrys. they are known for their accuracy and have the best customer service dept in the Industry if you would happen to need it. I have one in a 22 mag and love it. Lots of other Henry owners out there will tell you the same!
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

My choice of .22 rifle depends on what I'm going to use it for. Standing around plinking at cans, carryed with a sling on a Walkabout, shooting paper targets from a bench, etc.
My Walkabout rifle is a hopped up 19 3/8" barreled, 4X scoped Marlin 60W with a black nylon quick action sling.
My can plinker is either a Savage 6A with iron sights or a Browning BL-22 with a 4X scope.
My paper puncher is an 8 pound bolt action Mossberg 144 LSA with micrometer peep rear and globe front sights.
My wife's favorite rifle is our Rossi 62 pump.
As for Remington 597 rifles; I've found that if you can find the latest clips  (Wal Mart has 'em) and loosen the allen set screws that jam behind the bolt's guide rods it's a pretty reliable and accurate rifle.  It's trigger is easy to make nice. That said, I wouldn't buy one because I can't stand plastic stocks. To me they look and feel cheap. That's why I am not a fan of the Nylon 66. Plastic stock and the rifle itself much too light to be an accurate arm. They're also a pain in the ass to take apart, but then so is the Browning BL-22.

A Gander Mountain gunsmith said the 597 and Savage Mark II's were junk. I found out about the Savage the hard way.

I haven't found a good rifle yet. The Henry 001 had an unsafe trigger.

The CZ's have safeties that work in reverse of American rifles. Seems like most have to use match ammo to great those great groups. Lousy service.

I want a 1 MOA rifle and 10/22's seem to be mediocre.

STill looking.

I just bought a Mk I FVT and am very pleased with it. The accuracy is great, even with cheap ammo, 4 out of 5 went into a cloverleaf group at 50 yards with this rifle, and subsequent groups show all holes touching. Check out "more MK I FVT" by zoned on the Rimfire Central website for his target with Wolf ammo. The workmanship is very good and the target sights leave nothing to be desired. This is a single shot rifle set up for target work, but is also drilled and tapped for a scope. The AccuTrigger works as advertised. I paid $290 for this rifle in Idaho. A picture is available on Savagearms.com. It's not pretty but does it perform!!

Surprised no one has mentioned the Marlin 981t.  I have yet to get one, but it's on the list...  It is tube fed, which allows it to shoot Shorts as well as the Longs and Long Rifles.  To me it's a plus.  The shorts can be a lot of fun, and it holds like 20+ of the little buggers....

I had an 881  (same as 981T or close I would guess) that stovepiped, and eventually the handle broke off. Very accurate if you don't mind trouble. The cheap rifles aren't worth the trouble.

Consider the Anschutz 1710 in 22LR.  Very accurate and dependable rifle out the box. Superior trigger and action, top quality barrel and stock. Also shoots 1/4 inch groups (or better) at 50 yards consistently with most quality subsonic ammo. Can stay under 1/2" with supersonic ammo. I have it and the 1517  .17hmr MPR. Both are magnificient machines in every respect
