For field use, it is a .222 Sako with 3 x 9 Leupold.   For range shooting enjoyment, it is a .220 Ruger 77V with 3 x 9 Leupy.    Both are very accurate with no tinkering or handloads.   Never measured a group, but they are tight enough to be extremely confident in the field.

My favorite small bore is a M700 Classic in 257 Roberts.
She is a sweet little shooter. With 100gr Nosler BT's, will shoot in the .5's all day.
Great for deer and varmits, easy to shoot, cost effective.........
that my 257 Roberts!

Without a doubt it is my CZ 527 Lux/American. It began life as a CZ 527 Lux with the Turkish Walnut humpback stock and iron sights on the barrel. For the glass top I mounted a cheap Simmons Whitetail Classic in 6.5x20x50. That rifle is petite, the scope looked like a warhorse with a crinkle-cut finish. Actually, it looked like a television set mounted on top of the rifle, what with the 50mm objective lens and all. I took the front sight off and filled the screw hole with a dummy screw. I drifted the rear sight out of its ring on the barrel. I still had problems with the humpback stock trying to find the proper sight picture. One day I read that CZ-USA sold aftermarket stocks in American Walnut and maple, so I bought a fancy grade American Walnut stock for it, did some minor inletting to allow for the rear sight band on the barrel, glass bedded the action and dropped the barreled action in the stock. With my handloads the thing will print five 50 gr. Hornady SX bullets into an area slightly larger than my little fingernail. That stock is just downright beautiful. It looks like a chunk of chocolat marble. I just got through ordering a new glass top for it from The Optic Zone, a Bushnell Elite 3200 in 7x21x40. I had no problem with the other scope. It worked very well, but it sure detracted from the overall looks of the rifle. I think this new scope will be a lot better for it. So, that is why I call my rifle a CZ 527 Lux/American. That puppy is one, very accurate little mini-mauser rifle. Thanks for allowing me to rant. Tom Purdom.

Ruger M77mkII 25-06. Black skeletonized stock, stainless steel, long range shootin game dropper, with a Swift 3-9X scope. A couple of trips to the range to assure the loads are good to go and it will put the bullet where I want it when I want it.

A vintage savage 110 in .243 with a vintage Redfield vari/scope. Both
have been "together" since day one,  40 plus years.
For me the best part about this set-up is that it`s light plus it shoots
   just fine.
I`ll have to add my Savage 99 in .250 into the mix as i recent years
they both have been partners in the hunt.  One has longevity and the
    other American gun history.  :D

I put together a maple stocked Featherweight in 257 Roberts Ackley Improved.   It seems no matter what I load I can't get the groups above 1.5 inches.  It is a dream gun.

A Savage model 20 (early type) in .250 Savage. I don't use it for anything, it's a safe potato, but a great LIGHT rifle.  :D

Favourite ?
Tends to be the one in my hand, or the latest and greatest acquisition, but all six in my gun-cabinet are my favourites. They all have a purpose.

Smallbores ?
Latest is my (.5 MOA) Weatherby Vanguard 'Red Mist' Lt Varminter (22" ) in .223

Why ? ..... Easy to shoot, easy to load for, easy to buy reasonably cheap ammo, and easy to carry, inexpensive buy, and looks good too.

Just one slot along from it is my Anschutz .222. Looks Good, shoots straight, and easy to shoot and load for.

cheers,

Sean in 'Godzone'

I now have 3 small bores. My first centerfire was my winchester m70 Featherweight .243win. that now wears a Leupold Rifleman 3-9x40. Me and that gun have been through a lot togeather. This past winter I came across a new winchester m70 classic stainless in .243win., wearing a fine Burris Fullfeild II 3-9x40, in a local pawn shop that I just could not let get away. This gun is fast becoming my favorite all season rifle. I have already taken two large(200lb+) pigs, a coyote that was unlucky enough to take a second look at my spotlight, and only my second grey fox ever that I called in at night, the 100gr. power-point took her in the chest and exited right beside the tail. That fox is at the taxidermist right now. My latest rifle is a winchester m70 Sporter .25-06rem. I have yet to bag eny game with it, but I hope to remedy that this upcoming deer season.    But right now my all time favorite would have to be either of my two .243s. You can't beat'em.

I recently bought a new Rock River flat top with a removable carry handle to try my luck at high power matches. I put a 3-12 scope on it for load development and was pleasantly surprised that I was able to get most loads from 45 to 75gr. to shoot between 3/4 to 1 inch at 100 yards. This is not the most accurate rifle that I own, but this is with a rack grade 20" barrel and w/o a floating hand guard. I plan on adding a match grade barrel and floating hand guard as soon as the summer shooting season is over. I think the part I like best about it is its ability to handle different bullet weights.
It is fast becoming my favorite small bore.

I have to confess that since my last post on this thread I acquired a Martini Cadet sporter in 25-20. It has a heavy bbl, is equiped with an old Weaver K6 which is superb and can put 5 shots in an inch at 100yds, quite a feat considering it's using 75gn flatpoints.
So far it's only blooded 2 rabbits at fairly short range but it's lovely to shoot, especially since I got a trigger job on it.
I must confess that I'd be very sorely pressed to choose between it and my Enfield 303/25 althought the Enfield is more flexible.

I would like to be in this discussion but I have 2 favorites & the guns are too different & what I use
them for is different enough that I cannot pick one of them as my favorite.  :-X

I've got a Savage heavy barreled .22-250, a Mark V .257 Weatherby, .25-06, and this winter picked up a Savage 16 in .223 Rem.  I really like the .223.  Just found a combination of BL-C(2) and 50 grain V-max's that work well in it and it's my go-to rifle for practice.  It's reasonably accurate (not as accurate as the .22-250), relatively cheap to load, and very mild recoil.  If the barrel wouldn't get hot I'd be happy to keep firing round after round through it non-stop.  I s'pose I should probably get a .22 or .17 rimfire for practice, but in the meantime I'll keep shooting the .223.

I don't think Weatherby is making rifles in .224 magnum right now.  If I had the money and was looking to get a custom varminter made, I'd give strong consideration to their .224 mag.  It nearly equals .22-250 velocities in lighter bullets and does it with less powder and recoil.  Yeah, I know, brass is expensive.  But if I could afford the $3,000 custom gun + scope, I wouldn't quibble about $1 per brass case (OK, who am I kidding?  I'd still grumble about the price even if I were making millions)

The Varmintmaster was discontinued in 1994.  I don't know of another factory rifle offered in .224 Wby Mag other than the Weatherby Varmintmaster.  The .224 can achieve 3,700fps with a 55gr ,and 3,600fps with a 60gr bullet.  Sierra has a load that will reach 4,100fps with their 40gr bullet, and 4,000fps with their 45gr bullet.  I would imagine that those would wreck your barrel after a while.  I have been told that due to the freebore of the Weatherby rifle that the .224 is the ballistic twin to the 22-250, from what I have found on the internet that seems true.  I wonder sometimes why Roy did not keep the .220 Rocket around as it slightly outperformed the .220 Swift.
