Author Topic: Good .22 Cleaning Rod/Kit (Read 628 times)

I'm in need of a new cleaning rod for my .22 revolvers and would like some help deciding what to get. Are some better than others? Should I get a brass rod? Or nylon? Or is the $10 Hoppe's aluminum rod/kit sold at the local sporting goods store good enough?

Also, would any one recommend a bore snake? How about an Otis cleaning kit?

Right now it would be used on a Ruger Super Single Six and a S&W K-22, but will also be used on a M97 FA .22 in the future. Any suggestions...

The most recent trend in rods is that aluminum rods are taboo. Theory is that as an aluminum rod can oxidize it is simmilar to running a piece of sand paper down your barrel. Same with the coated rods, they can get grit imbedded in the coating and have the same effect. Personally I like the one piece stainless steel rods. I have heard alot of good things about the bore snakes but have never tried one. Hope this helps. KN

Woodchuck: Over the years I have probably owned every type rod on the market, at present I am using the otis system and love it, I have the kit that has ALL the brushes for both rifle/pistol and shotguns as well, you will always need a rod around the shop so invest in a stainless rod as they seem to be the one with the best reports, as KN said the others have been being talked down, good luck.

I own and use nothing but Dewey rods these days. Got a passle of them in all different caliber ranges and lengths for all my guns. They are top of the line and mine are all coated but you can get them coated or uncoated as you wish. I keep "most" of my cleaning supplies in an MTM Shooters Box. I saw most as even as big as it is it won't hold all the stuff I have for gun cleaning.
