Ruger Old Army with R&D Conversion Cylinder Test Report
« on: June 23, 2006, 09:44:06 AM »
Just wanted to pass along that I have one of the Ruger Old Army’s 5” SS with a R&D conversion cylinder I bought from Taylor’s also in SS.  With Pyrodex 30gr equivalent pellets, Wonder Wads, and a Speer balls it shoots about 6” low and a bit to the right at 50’.  But, shooting 45 Colt in the R&D cylinder it is dead on at 50’ shooting into 2” or 3” inches.  I reload my own “Cowboy Ammo” consisting of a Western Nevada 255gr LSWC over 8 gr of Unique for around 800 fps.  I plan to try 45 Colt loads using the 30gr Pyrodex Pellets, once I find cast bullets with a softer lube appropriate for black powder.  The great thing is that the R&D cylinder allows me to shoot smokeless 45 Colt loads at the local indoor range I frequent.  Living in Southern California the closest outdoor range that allows black powder in 60 miles out one way.
