Twentymile River Moose Permit
« on: March 30, 2003, 01:46:53 AM »
Has anyone here been lucky enough to ever get drawn for this permit? If so, how was the hunt and were you successful? I would appreciate any information since I think this will be one of my selections this year, but not sure yet.

I'm still interested on going to Kalgin Island, but have been told that the average size antlers on a mature bull is only around 38" by ADF&G. :o

You gotta love planning.

I've never been drawn for the twentymile hunt, and quit applying about 5 years ago.  I've fished the twentymile quite a bit, and there are a few good bulls in there.  A good way to hunt that would be to get Alpine Air to fly you into Carmen Lake or the lake at the terminus of Twentymile Glacier and a raft in and float out to the highway.  I think the USFS is trying to restrict motorized traffic up the river.  You can check on that at the Glacier Ranger Station in Girdwood.

Yukon Jack,

With that area being restricted to drawning permits only, and the bulls that you have seen in that area, do you think the success rate would be "high" to get a 60 inch bull? I wouldn't know what to think if I got the tag and shot another spike-fork bull. LOL With patience I can get one of those around the house. I have an uncle that would fly me over and got a gentlemen that offered to take me out on his boat if I managed to get this drawing permit (yeah right! :)). I've been applying for years now and have not got one yet. :( But I'll get one this year, I just know it! :)

I'm not sure about a 60 or 60+.  For a more sure bet for that, I'd try the Kobuk or Koyukuk.  Maybe the draw for the Martin River/Bering River.  I just don't think there are that many 60" bulls in the Girdwood to Spencer Glacier area.  If it were me, and I wanted a good bet on a really super sized bull, I'd try the Martin/Bering River area.  Cape Suckling is good too.  There aren't very many moose over there, but the ones there are huge.  Great genetics in that part.  Tough hunt though, and expensive.  I wouldn't go for the twentymile for a trophy.  I might be surprised, but I just don't think there's a bruiser of that caliber in the drainage, and as flat and brushy as it is, it would be hard to find.

Another real good bet is over by Stoney River in the south Alaska Range.  Bad thing about all of those are that they all require quite a bit of flight time and that equals a lot of money.  There's some pretty good bulls out of Nabesna, too.  Check with Ahtna corporation about the land status in the Copper River Basin, though.  They have a lot of private lands scattered throughout there.  Some good bulls though and if you have a four wheeler, its a ton cheaper.
