7X57 (7mm Mauser) Barrel
« on: June 10, 2006, 01:37:12 PM »
Is there a NEF barrel that can be rechambered for the 7X57 cartridge? I have a .308Win Survivor and would like to add the 7X57 as a second barrel. The 7X57 is my all-time favorite caliber. Not interested in the 7mm-08! I have shot the venerable 7X57 for 30 years in an Interarms Mark X, 1893 Spanish Mauser and 1895 Chilean Mauser and have garnered years of pure shooting enjoyment with handloads.

The 7x57 barrel was offered at one time, they show up in our classifieds once in a while and on ebay. The 7mm-08 chamber is as close as you'll get and it's too big to clean up with a 7x57 rechamber. Your next choice is to start with a .223 barrel and rechamber/rebore, that'll cost ya $250-$300.

There was one on ebay about a week ago. I didn't see what it ended up selling for....

Quickdtoo,

If I had NEF fit a .223 bull barrel to my Survivor, who would you recommend to rechamber/rebore to 7X57?

Thanks,
MH :?:

Wayne York has done 2 rebores and a rechamber for me and several other members here have had work done by him, he's real familiar with Handirifles and his 6 groove cut rifling is second to none! Give him a call or an email!!

menotomyhunter.
Had two rifles rebored. Started with a  223 24" bull barrel. One a 257 Roberts the other a 6x47(222Rem Mag). A 7x57 would be good with a 24" barrel. Have the barrel turned down to .600" at the muzzle if you think the 24" bull barrel is to heavy for a hunting rifle.

Just make sure to tell the smith to do the turning down before the rebore. The H&R barrels are nort stress relieved and you end up with a tapered bore if the turijng down is done after the rebore.

Both my barrels were turned into octagon to remove  weight. Both barrels shoot 3 shot groups under a 1/2".
Also they are both accurized as per my web site.

Shown is the 6x47. Rebored by Ron Smith in Wimborn Alberta.

I snagged a 7X57 (7mm Mauser) SB2 Ultra barrel off eBay this week. It is 24 inches in excellent condition and measures 0.726" at the muzzle. I guarantee this will see some deer hunting this year in northern California at the family's ranch.
Thanks to those that offered advice in my quest for a 7X57. It is my favorite all-time rifle cartridge; superb ballistics without a black & blue shoulder.

Cheers,
MH
