Everyyear I see older gentlemen come up to hunt. Due to arthritis, shoulder surgeries, or other physical restraints they are no longer able to handle the heavy recoil of a .338 Win Mag. They are more and more carrying .35 Whelens. The recoil is far more manageable with the Whelen, and under 250 yards the Moose or Bear is not going to know the differance. My Dad who is in his late 70s loves my .35s, and he dropped his Moose a few years ago with one shot right in the heart/lung area. Moose took two steps and fell dead. I like the .35s for bear from a stand. Big holes, that let out lots of blood. I consider the .35 Whelen to be able to bring down Moose, Caribou, or Black Bear out to 250 yards with no problems. For Grizzly I would limit the shot to 200 yards max. Not that the bullet won't perform, but giving the shooter a better chance of not messing up the shot. That last 50 yards the bullet is really beginning to drop and that trojectory can really mess you up.
